COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Panhandle Adult Rebuilding Center will host a ribbon cutting at noon tomorrow at 413 S.W. 6th Ave to celebrate the opening of its new building — the event will introduce the facility and its support services for those facing homelessness.  NewsChannel 10
  • Panhandle Community Services processed over 1,200 utility payments since October and will resume online applications by the end of this week. The service will also offer in-person help at the United Way resource fair (Feb. 10-11) for residents needing winter aid.  NewsChannel 10

BUSINESS NEWS

  • H.R. Flowers and Gifts, a Canyon landmark, is closing after 50 years and will finish selling inventory by February 22. Owner Glenda Moore is retiring and is offering the business for sale to local buyers seeking a new opportunity.  96.9 KISS FM

CULTURE NEWS

  • City officials in Canyon, West Texas A&M representatives, and a state representative met in a packed meeting today to plan funding strategies and private-state partnerships to keep the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum open in the city (a town hall with the museum society is set for February).  NewsChannel 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Amarillo College has received a $500,000 TRUE grant to expand short-term workforce training in high-demand business + technology fields. The funding will be used over two years beginning Dec. 1 to build industry-aligned programs for local job seekers.  NewsChannel 10
  • Amarillo Parks and Recreation is hosting a three-day Mini Sports Camp for children ages 3 to 5 at Warford Activity Center from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 14, 15, and 16 (registration closes Jan. 14; participation costs $35 per child), offering a fun introduction to soccer, basketball, and T-ball.  96.9 KISS FM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Panhandle Groundwater Conservation District will host the 8th Biennial Texas Panhandle Water Conservation Symposium on Feb. 11 at the Amarillo Civic Center Complex Heritage Room to discuss how rising industry growth may affect water supplies (tickets are $10 per person).  ABC 7 Amarillo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its Monday meeting, the TIRZ board approved a deal with Herring Hotel Partners for $90M renovations to the historic Herring Hotel to add 200 hotel rooms + a restaurant pending final city approval. The Potter County Commissioners’ Court will review the project on Jan. 12 at 9 a.m.  Amarillo Tribune
