  • Amarillo’s MLK Citywide Celebration will take place Monday, Jan. 19 (11 a.m.) at the Palo Duro Activity Center, featuring student performances by Amarillo ISD choir and local groups and keynote speaker Warren Coble emphasizing youth legacy and community unity.  Amarillo Globe-News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Marshalls is set to open at the Shops at Soncy on Soncy Rd once construction starts in January, with work scheduled to finish on April 4 at the former Joann's Fabrics location. The $15,000,000 project will offer a new shopping option for local residents.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Goodwill confirmed a new store is coming to the east side at Lawndale Shopping Center (2271 SE 27th); remodeling will begin this month with an April opening planned, and the site will later add a career resource center to support job training programs.  NewsTalk 940 AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • A community group is hosting a Save Our Museum rally to support the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum; residents will gather at noon on Saturday, Jan. 17 and march until about 3 p.m. to boost preservation efforts & honor this local treasure.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Brick Convention returned to Amarillo on Saturday, Jan. 10 and featured LEGO displays, rare sets, kid activities and build sessions. The event launched its 2026 tour and drew families and hobbyists to enjoy detailed exhibits and fun build challenges.  Amarillo Globe-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Amarillo Public Library launches Blind Date with a Book today— an event that runs through Feb. 12 and invites readers to choose a paper-wrapped mystery book at any library location. Participants return an entry form for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • The Amarillo Museum of Art is accepting registrations for spring Museum School classes starting Feb. 3 through April 16, with no classes from March 16-20 for Spring Break. Museum educators will lead weekly sessions and monthly Saturday Studios that cover drawing, painting, clay and other art techniques.  NewsChannel 10
  • Six local Amarillo schools are approved to receive state funding through the TEFA program for the 2026/2027 school year. Guardians can submit applications from Feb. 4 until March 17 with award notifications coming early April via a statewide lottery if needed.  Amarillo Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two local pools will close in summer 2026 after Parks and Recreation voted 8—1 to end annual repairs; officials say they will explore building a new aquatic center to replace the lost options.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Amarillo City Council voted Tuesday to permanently close the Southwest Pool and temporarily close the Southeast Pool due to deteriorating conditions—officials will decide next steps in upcoming meetings.  ABC 7 Amarillo

HEALTH NEWS

  • Construction crews have leveled the foundation and poured concrete for the Panhandle’s first state psychiatric hospital in Amarillo, which will house 75 patients. Potter County Judge Nancy Tanner said the new facility is expected to open in summer 2027 and help ease jail overpopulation concerns.  NewsChannel 10
