COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Discovery Center will host Parents’ Night Out on Friday, Feb. 13 in Amarillo, giving parents a chance for a date night while kids enjoy a space adventure and a Chick-fil-A dinner (registration is open).  96.9 KISS FM
  • Girl Scout Cookies are back in Amarillo with sales through March 1. A new cookie called Exploremores (made with chocolate, marshmallow, and toasted almond creme) is offered along with favorites while Girl Scouts set up near local stores such as Market Street and Walmart.  96.9 KISS FM
  • Amarillo PARC offers winter swimming and play activities at Warford Activity Center (1330 NW 18th Ave.) from Jan to May, featuring Inflatable Fest on Saturday, Jan. 17 from 1 to 6 p.m. and Kids Day Out on Monday, Jan. 19 for kids ages 5-6.  Amarillo Globe-News

  • HTeaO introduces a Pistachio Latte & cookie pairing to warm up winter mornings using Free Rein Homestead espresso blended with milk, vanilla, and toasted pistachio flavors. CULTURE NEWS

  • Amarillo College theater students earned Kennedy Center recognition for their production of A Streetcar Named Desire (by Tennessee Williams), winning honors for acting, design, stage management and ensemble work. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Returning students will see campus improvements next week at Amarillo College, including a glowing sign at the CUB (College Union Building), refreshed walkways, and an updated gym area.  96.9 KISS FM
  • Storybridge’s Dream and Donate book drive in Amarillo aims to collect 18,000 books to help children learn the power of reading. Donors can drop off books on Friday and Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at designated collection sites.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Texas A&M AgriLife is moving its High Plains Research and Extension Center from Amarillo to a new state-of-the-art facility in Canyon; the Amarillo site closed Jan. 15 and the new center will open Jan. 21 to serve about 60 staff + faculty and host programs for 22 counties.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo will use a $250K USDA grant to launch its first food animal residency program in July — the three-year initiative aims to support early career veterinarians serving rural areas.  ABC 7 Amarillo

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Texas Department of Agriculture warned about mysterious seed packages arriving from China after intercepting 120 in early January and over 1,200 recently. Residents are urged not to open or plant them and to call 1-800-TELL-TDA for safe collection — as officials worry invasive species may harm local farms.  ABC 7 Amarillo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Spectrum WT’s bench trial continued on Jan. 14 after Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk denied a summary judgment motion (affecting a planned April drag show at Legacy Hall), with a Fifth Circuit rehearing set for Jan. 23.  Amarillo Tribune
  • Residents in Amarillo's medical district are frustrated by heavy traffic at Coulter Street and Amarillo Boulevard, with delays sometimes extending near BSA hospital — public works director Alan Harder said signal timings adjust during peak hours and recommended alternate routes.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Sharpened Iron Studios is contesting a December eviction ruling by filing a motion to stay the order as its lawyer argues Amarillo College breached contract terms. The hearing is set for Jan. 20 (the college confirmed the date) as the legal battle continues.  NewsChannel 10
