  • Amarillo’s MLK celebration at Palo Duro High School on Monday, Jan. 19 honored Dr. King’s legacy by passing a torch to youth and leaders. Potter County Commissioner Warren Coble and local figures underscored unity and participation through speeches, music, and student performances (emphasizing the event’s focus on the next generation).  Amarillo Globe-News
  • The Lived Experience Advocacy Committee convened a community meeting today with the Amarillo Police Department to discuss solutions for homelessness. City leaders and nonprofit representatives stressed the need for more local partnerships + genuine support to improve services.  NewsChannel 10

  • Whiskers and Biscuits Cat Lounge plans to open as Amarillo's first venue where patrons pay a fee to interact with free roaming adoptable cats and enjoy a free snack and drink.   • Workforce Solutions Panhandle, partnering with the City of Amarillo, will host a job and resource fair for Tyson employees affected by the layoff on Tuesday, Jan. 27 from 1-5 p.m. at the Civic Center — North Exhibit Hall.  NewsChannel 10

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The American Red Cross of the Texas Panhandle Chapter is launching a wildfire mitigation program using grants to install virtual fencing + grazing measures that help protect homes, barns, and properties while experts advise residents to check smoke alarms and clear surrounding debris to reduce wildfire risk year-round.  ABC 7 Amarillo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After 1,761 layoffs at Tyson, candidates proposed measures at a press conference near the plant to secure cattle supplies, establish a price floor for farmers, and provide job cross-training including free community college courses. Rep. Jasmine Crockett and Mark Nair detailed plans to reduce future job losses.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Judge Kacsmaryk of the U.S. District Court denied Spectrum WT’s request to reverse the ban on an April 17 drag show at Legacy Hall at West Texas A&M University.   • Governor Abbott activated state emergency resources to prepare for an Arctic cold front that will bring freezing rain, ice and snow later this week—state teams, including the National Guard and DOT, are set to keep roads safe in areas like Amarillo.  Amarillo Globe-News
