COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At 4:25 p.m. on Jan. 22, Mission 2540 founder Brooks Boyett led after-school activities at North Grand Villas following layoffs at Tyson Foods. He engaged local kids with art and play while asking for dedicated volunteers + community support.  Amarillo Tribune
  • Toot’n Totum customers raised $22,404 for Kids Inc.’s Rockrose Sports Park through its *Change for the Better* round-up campaign that ran Dec. 8–Dec. 21. The check was presented Jan. 22 at Bus and Freda Dugger Sportsplex as construction speeds up for the sports complex, scheduled to complete on March 16.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • McDonald's announced that its Gives Back Day on Jan. 27 will support local families as funds go to Family Support Services (a nonprofit aiding victims and offering counseling) and residents can help by visiting any local McDonald's.  NewsTalk 940 AM

  • Amarillo Workforce Solutions and the City will host a Tyson job fair on Tuesday, Jan. 27 from 1 plus 5 p.m. at the Civic Center North Exhibit Hall to help employees laid off on Jan. 20 meet local hiring managers for on-site interviews.  96.9 KISS FM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday and Friday, Amarillo shoppers crowded local stores and online portals to buy food + medicine and other supplies as they prepared for a heavy winter storm forecast to bring 6 to 12 inches of snow through Sunday.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Snow began falling Friday in parts of Amarillo as Winter Storm Fern moved into the area, and additional snowfall is forecast today (Saturday, Jan. 24) and tomorrow across the city.  Amarillo Globe-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Airport officials at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport warn that winter weather may delay flights and advise travelers to arrive at least two hours early today; they have activated deicing plans and updated weather technology to keep operations running smoothly.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • TxDOT crews have worked around the clock since Wednesday to clear Amarillo roads and those near the New Mexico border by spraying water salt (brining) material and sand salt to prevent ice; drivers are urged to allow space for operations and prepare emergency supplies.  ABC 7 Amarillo
