COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Sincerely, Flowers celebrated its first anniversary today by hosting a free flower bar that encouraged donations to Bridging the Gaps (a nonprofit helping the homeless); 400 locals attended, the shop donated $25,000 in flowers and raised about $3,000. A fundraiser is scheduled for April 18 at Shark Beach.  NewsChannel 10
  • Tickets are on sale for Amarillo Lincoln Reagan Dinner featuring Dr. Ben Carson and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Amarillo Civic Center Heritage Room, where doors open at 5 p.m. for social time and a prime rib dinner by The Big Texan at 6 p.m.  NewsChannel 10
  • Opportunity School is fundraising with a Valentine cookie sale where 100% of sales benefit its children and families. The school is offering two dozen thumbprint cookies in a decorative box for $25 with orders due by Feb. 6 and delivery scheduled for Feb. 13 in Amarillo and Canyon.  NewsChannel 10

  • Crews are on scene battling a fire south of Fritch on Highway 136 & have halted its forward progression with help from several agencies.  NewsChannel 10

  • Sweet Boba Tea and Dessert Lounge is set to begin remodeling in Town Square Village this month, with work expected to finish in April for an estimated $100,000. The new spot will serve boba tea + desserts to meet Amarillo residents’ demand for fresh flavors.  96.9 KISS FM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents voted on a design for Amarillo’s newest painted quarter horse statue, and artist Gary Ward painted it with a bluebonnet theme for Asher Point Independent Living (a local senior center) where it will soon stand as a community landmark.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • WTAMU Theatre is reimagining Pride and Prejudice with a modern twist in a production set for Feb. 6-7 at 7:30 p.m., with additional performances on Feb. 8, Feb. 12-14 at 7:30 p.m., and Feb. 15 at 2:30 p.m. at the Happy State Bank Studio Theatre on campus.  96.9 KISS FM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bonham Middle School won the Pantex Regional Science Bowl (held on Jan. 31 at AmTech Career Academy) earning $1,000 and an all-expenses-paid trip to the national competition in Washington, D.C. The win marked a return to top form after a second-place finish last year.  Amarillo Globe-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Amarillo installs its first Safe Haven Baby Box at Fire Station #9 (2015 Paramount Blvd) to offer a safe way for parents to surrender newborns in crisis. A dedication ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow, Feb. 4 at 1 p.m.  NewsTalk 940 AM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Texas Health and Human Services released its 2024 report on maternal depression, mortality, & morbidity in December. Local obstetrics expert Dr. Teresa Baker said two pregnancy-related deaths occurred in the past five years and local programs like Vibrant Moms are expanding prenatal care; more coverage will follow later this week.  Amarillo Tribune
  • Panhandle Community Services received a grant from the Hogg Foundation to strengthen local mental health outreach programs in the rural Panhandle, including counties (Dallam, Hutchinson, and Ochiltree).
