COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Xcel Energy restored power for 97 percent of Panhandle customers affected by Tuesday’s Public Safety Power Shutoff and weather outages. Amarillo residents have service (except near the ongoing Lavender Fire) while crews continue repairs as high winds persist.  ABC 7 Amarillo

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Casey's General Store at 14901 I-27 will open tomorrow, Feb. 20, offering fuel, snacks, and its famous handmade pizza to locals. The new store (replacing a Cefco site) is part of an ongoing update to convenience stops along I-27.  96.9 KISS FM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Amarillo Museum of Art hosts opening receptions for Ken Little's Fields of Green and Cultural Currency from the Riemer Collection on Feb. 20 at 6:30 p.m. Gallery talks at 7 and 7:30 p.m. will feature music and food provided by DJ Windows 98 + Black Fig Food.  Amarillo Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Amarillo Area Foundation is accepting scholarship applications for the 2026-27 academic year from students across the Texas Panhandle, who must submit completed forms by Friday, Mar. 6 at noon+ gather all required documents before applying.  NewsChannel 10
  • An independent forensic audit at Amarillo College found no funds missing after its VP of Business Affairs, Chris Sharp, was placed on administrative leave. The college has increased oversight and will discuss cost overruns on bond and construction projects at the Board of Regents meeting on Tuesday.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • WT SGA issued a symbolic resolution on Feb. 16 to support repairs that would keep the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum on campus after its March 2025 closure for fire safety issues (vote pending next meeting). The museum houses over two million artifacts and serves as a cultural hub for local visitors.  Amarillo Globe-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Crews battled a fast-moving wildfire that ignited northwest of Amarillo near Valley de Oro yesterday, prompting evacuation warnings & road closures as strong winds and low humidity aided its spread. A Fire Weather Watch is in effect today through the evening to guard against further fire growth.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Wildfires burned in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles on Wednesday. In Texas, a fire near Sims prompted a warning, road closures near Borger and evacuations followed the 12,000-acre Lavendar Fire in Oldham County & a 9,000-acre fire burned, while Oklahoma saw three fires including the 145,000-acre Ranger Road Fire.  ABC 7 Amarillo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wildfires forced the Texas Department of Transportation to close roads on Wednesday, including US 87 between FM 1719 and SH 354 near Dumas and FM 1412 in Deaf Smith County. Traffic was redirected to RM 687 in Stinnett, and drivers were urged to check drivetexas.org for updates.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller declared an agricultural emergency today as wildfires continue to affect producers in the Panhandle and West Texas — he urged Texans to donate to the STAR Fund for disaster recovery grants.  NewsChannel 10
