  • Around 30-40 people gathered outside Pioneer Hall on the WT campus in Canyon on Saturday, Feb. 21 to urge Texas A&M to invest in keeping the museum and its 2 million artifacts in the community.   • Southwest Church of Christ on 45th now promises a baptism (instead of towing) to anyone parking in a non-church spot, adding humor for Amarillo drivers. The playful sign brings a light twist to local parking rules.  96.9 KISS FM
  • Girl Scout cookie sales continue in Amarillo as the deadline is extended to March 15 due to weather delays; the new Exploremores and classic flavors will be available at United Supermarkets & Walmart with proceeds supporting camps and trips for scouts.  Amarillo Globe-News

  • The Panhandle Council of Car Clubs is hosting the 41st Annual Make-A-Wish Car Show at the Amarillo Civic Center on March 7-8, and families can enter a drawing for a free 4-pack of passes from Feb. 23 until March 1 (tickets cost $7 for adults, $5 for kids and free for children under 6).  96.9 KISS FM

  • The Eddie Bauer store at Westgate Mall closed its doors today, leaving an empty space in Amarillo. The company will shift its online sales and design operations elsewhere as shopping habits continue to change.  96.9 KISS FM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Amarillo event organizers unveiled plans for Route 66's centennial celebration (including art exhibits, a Boots and Brews trail, classic car rallies, and a mural 400 feet long) set to run from March through Oct. 10.   • Amarillo College’s audit finds no missing funds but uncovers oversight failures with a $3.6M transfer + $700K in extra contract costs and reporting gaps. Trustees will discuss new safeguards today at the next Board of Regents meeting.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Amarillo College will host its first STEM and Business Career and Transfer Fair Wednesday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Washington Street Campus Event Center. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Assessments are underway for fires in the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles. Texas A&M Forestry Service said the 8 Ball Fire did not damage homes except an abandoned mobile home, and reports for the Lavender Fire are pending; meanwhile, Tyrone evacuations ended after multiple losses & schools released students early.  NewsChannel 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Attorney General Ken Paxton & Xcel Energy agreed to a temporary injunction that requires rapid, large-scale inspections of aging power poles to reduce wildfire risks linked to the 2024 Smokehouse Creek Fire. The move follows proactive procedures the company began two years ago.  NewsChannel 10
  • Amarillo City Transit seeks community input on ACT's Coordinated Public Transit, Human Services Transportation Plan.
