CRIME NEWS

  • A second City of Amarillo employee named Vanessa Robinson pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to embezzle HUD funds meant for homeless housing—she stole $121,325 and now faces up to five years in prison along with fines and supervised release.  ABC 7 Amarillo

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Amarillo College recently hosted Women in Industry to encourage about 120 young women to explore technical careers like HVAC, welding and construction. Instructors and local graduates offered advice on overcoming challenges in these male-dominated fields—showing that success is within reach.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • West Texas A&M University has established a new endowed scholarship and professorship to honor retiring AISD superintendent Doug Loomis. The scholarship has a $25,000 principal and the professorship a $125,000 endowment funded by an anonymous donor and will support teacher preparation as Loomis retires June 30.  NewsChannel 10

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Evacuations were lifted and some roads reopened after wildfires burned parts of the Panhandle, including a 350-acre blaze near Borger and a 15,000-acre fire in Dallam County that crossed into Oklahoma—officials advised caution with lingering smoke—as crews continued monitoring hot spots.  NewsChannel 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT announced that northbound traffic on I‑27 near Canyon will be detoured for bridgework today at 9 a.m.—drivers will follow the detour along the frontage road at the Country Club Road exit and reenter I‑27 at the next ramp located south of the direct connect bridge.  NewsChannel 10
  • Amarillo North Branch Library closed today as staff moved books and materials to prepare for renovations. Renovations will start Monday, March 24 & staff said work could take a month or longer while the other four branches remain open.  NewsChannel 10
  • Legislators introduced bills to improve the state's wildfire response following the 2024 Smokehouse Creek Fire that devastated parts of the Panhandle. The measures will boost emergency management and recovery after trees were damaged along main roads in Canadian — a sign of the fire's lasting impact.  ABC 7 Amarillo
