ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early Saturday morning, firefighters controlled an accidental fire at a home on (407 North Mississippi Street) in north Amarillo that displaced four residents and caused $38,000 in damages (with no injuries reported).  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Over the weekend, the Amarillo Fire Department said a semi-truck crashed into the Batteries — Bulbs storefront off West I-40 at 12:57 a.m. Sunday and its driver was taken to a local hospital, while a house fire on North Mississippi Street on Saturday at 6 a.m. displaced four residents and caused about $38,000 in damage.  Amarillo Globe-News

CRIME NEWS

  • Andrew William Jillard, a convicted sex offender, was arrested by Amarillo police for possessing child pornography with images of an infant and for bestiality after a tip from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children on Feb 27 led to a phone search on March 6 when he came to register his vehicle (the search revealed nine images of child abuse material and chats about trading explicit photos).  ABC 7 Amarillo

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Amarillo College will host its Men in Healthcare career event tomorrow from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Building A, Room 109 at the West Campus (6222 S.W. 9th Ave) where free tours, a speaker panel, advising and lunch will offer insights into various healthcare career paths.  NewsChannel 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Texas Department of Transportation said two Amarillo District crew members—Kyle Van Winkle from the Borger Maintenance Section and Anthony Reed from the Canadian Maintenance Section—will compete in a state roadeo in Austin this spring. They will take part in events like vehicle inspection, load and tie-down, and spotter drills.  NewsChannel 10
  • Bell Boeing said that work on a new $590 million Navy aircraft project will be done in Amarillo with 13% of the job done locally to build five CMV-22B aircraft— and the work will finish by January 2028.  NewsChannel 10
  • The City of Amarillo announced it will start a Chief of Police search by issuing a request for proposals in the next couple of months after former Chief Martin Birkenfeld left, and Interim Chief Jimmy Johnson is leading the department while preparing for public input. The process will launch this fall and the new chief is expected to be appointed by January 2026—ensuring community engagement throughout the search.  NewsChannel 10

  • Texas health experts said the measles outbreak has spread to 11 counties — with over 270 confirmed cases and many unvaccinated children affected — and warned that without better vaccination messaging and faster contact tracing the illness could soon spread nationwide.  Amarillo Globe-News
