COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On April 2, two Panhandle firefighters, Zeb Smith (of the Fritch Volunteer Fire Department) and Scott Glass (of the Perryton Fire Department), will be honored at the State Capitol in Austin for their ultimate sacrifice. Families and colleagues will gather on the south lawn in a memorial service to remember them and nine other fallen firefighters.  NewsChannel 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Emergency crews responded Friday afternoon to an explosion at the Skyland Grain Elevator in Sunray—five people were injured and taken to area hospitals while nearby residents were evacuated and crews worked to restore gas and electrical power.  KGNC

  • Pondaseta Brewing Co. has opened a new brewery in the old Santa Fe Depot at 1001 2nd Ave in Canyon. It has two bars with more than 20 taps and a restaurant and will host a grand opening party soon (it is open Monday through Friday from 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday from 11 to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 11 to 3 p.m.).  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Xcel Energy is monitoring high winds for fire risk and possible power outages in Texas and New Mexico and will use Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings— it will also assess a need for Public Safety Power Shutoffs on Tuesday, April 1.  ABC 7 Amarillo

  • Amarillo City Councilmember Tom Scherlen returned to work after a health emergency that led to two surgeries and a 10-day hospital stay. He said he will improve roads, water lines, and wastewater systems as he runs for reelection—thanking residents for their support.  Amarillo Globe-News
