COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Southwest AMBUCS has opened table sales for its annual Derby Day fundraiser at Amarillo Botanical Gardens on Saturday, May 2. The event will feature Derby-themed entertainment, live race viewing, food, drinks and reserved seating, with proceeds supporting local community programs.  NewsChannel 10
  • The Amarillo Botanical Gardens will host Garden Fest on Saturday, Apr. 25, offering garden workshops, local vendors, kids crafts and food trucks for $5 admission (members and children under 5 are free).   • An Amarillo couple launched a sober living home called A Place for Grace after funding cuts forced the closure of Cenikor's recovery housing on Sept. 30, 2025. The home for six men charges $100 weekly rent and holds interviews to fill remaining spots (as they plan future expansion).  Amarillo Tribune
  • PARC will host the Sole4Soul Race at 8:30 a.m. on Apr. 11 at 413 SW 6th Avenue, with runners choosing between a 1-mile, 5k, or 10k route that follows the paths many members travel daily; participants can also tour the new facility to learn about programs supporting those in need.  NewsChannel 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews battle the 1,261-acre Meadow View Fire east of Highway 287 near the Canadian River today — it is 80% contained as heavy equipment and a helicopter help in the response. Officials say no structures are threatened and forward progression has been halted.  NewsChannel 10

  • Genuine Texas Tacos, led by tattoo artist Jesus B. Ramos, will soon open at 1302 23rd St. in Canyon, the former Hil's Burgers building; the new restaurant will serve Tex-Mex favorites including breakfast burritos to local residents and students.  NewsTalk 940 AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • WT will host a free storytelling festival and jazz concert on Apr. 16 in Canyon, featuring a workshop led by Dr. Hanson as students perform varied tunes. A multimedia concert that brings da Vinci’s notebooks to life follows on Apr. 19 at Amarillo Art Institute & requires reservations.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Lone Star Ballet returns with TimeSteps: Rock of Ages at the Globe-News Center on Apr. 17 at 7:30 p.m. and Apr. 18 at 5 p.m. Director Roxann Seaton leads 40+ dancers in a show that invites the audience to cheer, sing, and dress in era-inspired outfits + enjoy rock hits.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • The Amarillo Museum of Art will open the Amarillo College and West Texas A&M University Student Faculty Exhibition Friday, April 10, with an opening reception from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at 2200 South Van Buren. EDUCATION NEWS

  • WT honored its top student employees on Monday, Apr. 6 when Amarillo undergraduate Landrey Posey and Hereford graduate assistant Jessica Kenedy received awards for campus safety and leadership during an emergency; the ceremony was held at the Fairly Club (Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium).  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Don Harrington Discovery Center announced its 2026 Summer Camp Discovery program running June 1 to July 31. The camp features nine themed weeks with science, crafts and dinosaur exhibits for kids ages 3 through fifth grade (full-day camps for kids 5 or older) with Wildcat Bluff visits for older campers.  NewsChannel 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Potter County Sheriff Brian Thomas warned residents about scam phone calls and advised them not to send payments by phone. He will also host a DEA Medication Take Back Day on April 25 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) at Walmart on Tascosa Road.  Amarillo Globe-News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Amarillo's Rockrose Sports Complex is ahead of schedule, with baseball and softball fields nearing completion due to a mild winter. The privately funded facility will finish on March 9 to host youth tournaments, and Kids Inc. has raised over $30 million while needing $8 to $10 million more.  NewsTalk 940 AM
