  • Amarillo SPCA is moving the annual Muttfest to the Rex Baxter Building at the Tri-State Fairgrounds on May 17 from noon until 5 p.m. to avoid weather issues from its former venue at Starlight Ranch; the event will feature dog contests, low-cost vaccinations, free microchipping, and a silent auction.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Amarillo has seen population shifts as Randall County grew by 20,000 since 2014 while Potter County lost 2,000 since 2020. City officials created five empowerment zones in Potter (including North Heights) to lower taxes and fees and make neighborhoods more attractive.  Amarillo Tribune
  • United Way hosted its annual CEO luncheon on Thursday afternoon in Amarillo + Canyon where business and community leaders discussed fundraising strategies to meet local needs and guide decisions with data.   • The Pleasant Valley River Road Revitalization Group will host a cleanup from Saturday, Apr. 11 at 8 a.m. until Sunday, Apr. 12 at 5 p.m. at Pleasant Valley Park (Central Ave and Sherill Lane); residents may dispose of debris: tires and tree limbs (cut to six feet) and household junk.  NewsChannel 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Centennial Time Capsule, marking 100 years of Texas State Parks history, is on display today at Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Weighing over 300 pounds and built from pecan wood and bronze (from Mother Neff State Park), it will be exhibited until its next move.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Amarillo's Yellow City Comic Convention will mark its 10th year at the Civic Center from April 17-19. The three-day event will feature seven special guests, cosplay contests, gaming, pet adoptions & more, with proceeds benefiting Mission 2540.  Amarillo Globe-News

  • Registration is open for Wildcat Wednesdays at Wildcat Bluff Nature Center, offering guided hikes + educational activities for children every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Camp sessions run through Fall Equinox and include early drop off and late pick up options.  96.9 KISS FM
  • On April 8, the Donald D. Harrington Fellows returned to Amarillo for their annual symposium, where UT faculty and graduate students shared research on AI, robotics, and natural sciences (highlighting local impact). GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • House Bill 2844 would centralize food truck permits by replacing separate city permits with one state license, easing travel across the Texas Panhandle. Current permits in Amarillo expire June 30 so food truck owners must reapply on July 1 (local environmental health director Anthony Spanel noted).  ABC 7 Amarillo

HEALTH NEWS

  • Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare and Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine will host a free pet vaccine clinic tomorrow at the Pavilion at the Santa Fe Depot (401 S. Grant St.) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., offering rabies, DAPP, and HCP vaccines and microchips to residents.  NewsChannel 10
