COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Amarillo Downtown Lions Club will host its annual All American Pancake Festival this Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon at the AmTech Career Academy on Plains Blvd. All proceeds will benefit Foundation Charities that support programs such as the Texas Lions Camp for children with physical disabilities and local eyeglasses programs while tickets cost $7 in advance, $10 at the door, with free entry for children 5 and under.  NewsChannel 10
  • Transformation Park, a new facility offering shelter and resources for Amarillo’s homeless, opened April 12 at 1501 S. 5th Ave to provide a pathway to permanent housing—local leaders and community members celebrated its grand opening. The park will welcome its first 25 residents on April 23 as it plans future expansion to address the growing need for safe spaces.  Amarillo Globe-News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A residential fire on North Polk Street occurred on April 11 at 4:25 p.m. — firefighters put out the heavy flames while one resident was taken to the hospital for a lack of home oxygen — and officials later said the fire was unintentional.  NewsChannel 10
  • A large fire broke out at a home on 1405 N. Polk on Friday, April 11, and firefighters quickly controlled the blaze while one person was taken to the hospital for low oxygen—property damage was estimated at $15,000 and officials ruled the fire unintentional.  ABC 7 Amarillo

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bomb City Distillery launched its first bourbon whiskey after a Friday ribbon-cutting ceremony that unveiled 251 bottles of 750ml and 36 bottles of 375ml aged for over two years. The bourbon is made with a mash bill of blue corn—winter wheat—red-malted barley that shows the Texas Panhandle's unique flavor and will help the distillery expand its distribution from Texas to nationwide markets.  Amarillo Globe-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lone Star Ballet will perform Cleopatra at Amarillo Civic Center on April 25th at 7:30 p.m. and on April 26th at 3:00 p.m. Audiences can enter a contest to win four tickets and a $75 gift card — entries require a name, email and phone number with winners notified on April 21st.  96.9 KISS FM
  • Today, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon reported 149 fire code violations, including blocked hallways, wiring issues, and too much combustible storage. Museum officials said they are digitizing exhibits for alternate locations and plan to build a new site costing about $250 million—pending re-inspection on April 22 and legislative approval before June 2.  ABC 7 Amarillo

  • The Amarillo branch of the NAACP will host its annual Lillie P. Miller Scholarship Banquet on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Amarillo Area Foundation at 919 S. Polk—Dominique Jackson will serve as guest speaker to help raise funds for scholarships for top local students.  NewsChannel 10

  • The League of Women Voters is hosting two non-partisan candidate forums this month at the Virgin Patterson Auditorium inside Happy State Bank at 7th and Taylor Street—one for Amarillo Mayor and City Council candidates today with snacks at 5:30 p.m., and one for Amarillo College Board of Regents and AISD Board of Trustees on April 22.
