COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Transformation Park is a new center that offers shelter and services to people who are homeless; it opened on April 12 at 1501 S. 5th Ave.—funded by public and private donations, it has a day center and 45 pallet homes to help rebuild lives. The first 25 residents will move in on April 23 as community leaders plan to expand the project to support more people in need.  Amarillo Globe-News

  • The special edition of Ruben on the Road celebrated 100,000 miles of stories across the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles and Eastern New Mexico—Ruben reviewed his travels and invited viewers to watch his stories on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.   NewsChannel 10

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Workforce Solutions Panhandle reported that the labor market remained strong in March with a 3.1% unemployment rate, the labor force growing by 2,098 workers, and employment increasing by 2,272 jobs. The report reflects a persistently tight market—an encouraging sign for local job seekers.  KGNC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Texas Panhandle faces severe storms that could bring large hail — up to golf ball size — and 70 mph winds as they are expected to form near Highway 60 around 2 p.m. and move east into the evening, prompting residents to secure outdoor items against local flooding.  ABC 7 Amarillo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a press conference, nonprofit board member Laura Street said misleading comments by interim AEDC chairman Alex Fairly sparked controversy over a $650,000 wire transfer meant to help The Range become a global food hub. The dispute has led to an end in collaboration with AEDC—while a former board member disputes Street's claims.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • The Potter County Sheriff's Office will host the bi-annual DEA National Take Back Day on Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Walmart on Tascosa Road and West Amarillo Boulevard where only pharmaceutical products and liquids in consumer containers will be accepted.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Early voting for the May 3 local elections begins today at multiple sites in Potter and Randall counties, including city, college, and school district locations in Amarillo and Canyon. Voting hours are set (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday to Friday and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday) at each site.  NewsChannel 10
  • TxDOT announced a detour on northbound I-27 just east of Canyon today for bridgework, and drivers will be redirected to Country Club Road’s frontage road + re-enter I-27 at the ramp south of Rockwell Road while using caution in work zones.  NewsChannel 10
  • Today, early voting for the May 3 municipal election in Amarillo and the public safety bond measure in Canyon begins and runs through April 29 at designated sites with hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The Amarillo League of Women Voters will also host a candidate forum for Amarillo College and school board races at Happy State Bank’s Virgil Patterson Auditorium at 6 p.m.  Amarillo Globe-News
