COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chick-fil-A at 4510 Coulter will host a stuffed animal sleepover on Friday, Apr. 24 from 5 to 7 p.m. for kids to drop off their plush toy for crafts and free ice cream + families collect them Saturday between 8 and 10 a.m. with free Chick-n-Minis breakfast.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • During National Volunteer Week from April 19 to 25, local groups celebrated Amarillo volunteers. Amarillo Parks and Recreation recognized 30 individuals who cleaned Thompson Park on April 18 in honor of Earth Day, while other organizations highlighted volunteer work that supports children and community projects.  Amarillo Tribune
  • This weekend, from April 23-26, Amarillo hosts several events including the Power of the Purse fundraiser, the West Texas Ranch Rodeo, Garden Fest on April 25, and an Autism Walk on Saturday. They bring competitions + live performances for community fun.  Amarillo Globe-News

  • A building on Sixth is being turned into Al's Garage and Al's Backyard, where visitors will enjoy two bars, a food truck, and live music (on Saturdays) along with games and outdoor fun; the new spots will open around Memorial Day.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Calico County has been serving Amarillo for over 40 years; co-owner Steven Garcia took over in May 2017, and business partner Chris Reinhardt joined in 2022, helping update the restaurant’s appearance while returning to its classic recipes that draw longtime patrons & younger customers.  NewsChannel 10

  • Six Amarillo bookstores join the Route 66 Bookstore Crawl until May 2 to celebrate Route 66's 100th anniversary and Independent Bookstore Day on April 25 — participants can pick up a passport at select locations and collect stamps for unique prizes.  Amarillo Tribune
  • Amarillo Wind Ensemble will present its free “Patron’s Choice” concert on Sunday, April 26, at 7 p.m. at The Church at Quail Creek (801 Tascosa Rd) where supporters picked an eclectic mix including lullabies and tributes to Neil Diamond.  96.9 KISS FM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Amy Criss, director of West Texas A&M University's Military and Veteran Services, was honored on April 21 with the Faculty/Staff Military-Connected Excellence Award for her work supporting veteran students (including a new Veterans Lounge) at the university. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new state analysis warns that Texas faces a $170B water crisis in the next 50 years, stressing conservation steps like capturing rainwater and improving water storage on farms and ranches. Public comments on the proposal are open until the end of May.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • The Texas A&M Forest Service has increased staffing and resources to boost wildfire response amid ongoing high wind and low humidity risks. Staging areas are established in Dumas, Childress, and Shamrock, with out-of-state teams assisting at Randall County’s Fire Station 1 in Amarillo.  NewsChannel 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Amarillo drivers will face ongoing construction as TxDOT's $47M I-27 project connects the city with Laredo. The project starts Nov. 30 and will add four new lanes, traffic signals, bridges, and ramps from north of FM 2186 to north of Arden Rd, set to complete by Nov. 2029.  NewsTalk 940 AM

  • Amarillo experts at The Bridge Children’s Advocacy Center warn that subtle grooming signs such as extra privileges and secret one-on-one time may signal risk from trusted adults; they urge parents to act early and call the Texas Abuse Hotline (1-800-252-5400) if abuse is suspected.  NewsChannel 10
