COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Babji Yalamanchili of Keep Amarillo Clean has collected about 300 bags of trash and plans to clean every Saturday until July 4 to reach 500 bags while inviting Amarillo residents to join the effort.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Amarillo Zoo & Sanctuary is upgrading its grounds and rebuilding exhibits with community support while staff and volunteers update enclosures and clear overgrown areas. The nonprofit will host a soft opening on April 27 at 9:30 a.m. (Local businesses and schools helped the progress.)  NewsChannel 10
  • Amarillo nonprofit Bikers Against Child Abuse will host a child abuse awareness event tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at the Potter County Courthouse, 501 S. Fillmore St. + Organizers will display 124 stuffed animal toys and a symbolic teddy bear to honor children lost last year.  NewsChannel 10

  • The Cake Company of Canyon now offers its fried pies at select Pak-A-Sak convenience stores in Amarillo and Canyon. The treats are available at multiple locations, including 2800 4th Ave in Canyon and 5900 Hollywood Rd in Amarillo + additional spots.  96.9 KISS FM
  • Pantex has started building a new 14,000 sqft office space designed to house teams working on complex projects. The Flexible Support Facility II (using ENERGY STAR design) is expected to be complete by mid-2028.  NewsChannel 10

  • The Amarillo Little Theatre presents School of Rock from April 30 through May 17 at Allen Shankles Mainstage; the musical features live instrumental performances by talented local youth + original music by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber.  Amarillo Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WT held a campus celebration on Apr. 22 in front of the renovated Geneva Schaeffer Education Building to share the One West capital campaign success that raised over $208 million from 13,377 donors.   • Texas is awarding over 42,000 school vouchers to students with disabilities and their siblings between Apr. 22 and today through the TEFA program. A lottery will be held during the week of Apr. 27 for additional awards to lower-income households.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • The Panhandle Council of Car Clubs will host the Ike Avery Scholarship Breakfast Fundraiser on Saturday, April 25 at the Black Historical Cultural Center on North Hayden Street from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Visitors can enjoy all you can eat pancakes for $8 to support a scholarship for a Palo Duro student.  NewsChannel 10

  • Texas offers an emergency preparedness tax-free weekend beginning at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Apr. 26 when select items like radios and flashlights are exempt from sales tax at Academy in Amarillo.   • Pantex began construction on a new office building near Amarillo that will offer 14,000 sqft of modern office space and updated technology. The project is one of several upgrades at the site + it is set to be completed by mid-2028.  Amarillo Globe-News
