  • Amarillo kids will run lemonade stands around town Saturday, May 3 to learn business skills and raise funds for a chosen nonprofit—stands will operate in neighborhoods and outside local businesses. The event teaches them to set spending, saving and donation goals while garnering community support.  96.9 KISS FM
  • Square Mile Community Development lost its AmeriCorps support unexpectedly—ending service for its four staff and prompting the nonprofit to seek new funding to keep its urban farms and Refugee Resource Center open. The organization, which also lost a $150,000 grant in February, is working hard to continue serving underserved neighborhoods in Amarillo.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Tomorrow, Amarillo will host Lemonade Day where young entrepreneurs set up lemonade stands in neighborhoods and outside businesses to learn business skills and raise funds for local nonprofits—kids practice spending, saving, and donating. CRIME NEWS

  • In Amarillo, John Paul Ortega was found guilty of Capital Murder on May 1 for killing Iliana Garza and her unborn child in a parking lot after a 4+ hour jury deliberation, and he will spend life in prison without parole.  NewsTalk 940 AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Amarillo’s Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Cinco de Mayo cook-off fajita festival (5 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Hodgetown) and sponsoring a parade that begins at 10 a.m. near Alamo Park with about 50 floats; local groups will join the celebrations to enjoy live music and cultural dance performances while raising funds for student scholarships and internships.  Amarillo Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ross Rogers Golf Complex in Amarillo was named Texas’ top economy golf course by the Dallas Morning News after the Mustang Course took first and Wildhorse Course placed fourth, with all four city courses in the state’s top 25. City General Manager George Priolo said the work is hard, as the greens are mowed every day, cups are changed and trash cleaned up—efforts that keep the courses in top shape.  ABC 7 Amarillo

  • Amarillo voters will cast ballots tomorrow, May 3, for city council seats and a new mayor at polling places open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.+ Voters in nearby counties will also select school board members and vote on a public safety bond while needing to show valid photo ID as required.  Amarillo Globe-News
