  • The Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare Department will host free pet vaccination and microchip clinics on three Mondays in May — May 5, May 12, and May 19 — at its shelter on S. Osage St. Pet owners must keep dogs leashed or cats crated and can attend without an appointment.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Amarillo SPCA will host its annual Muttfest Day of the Dog Fiesta event this Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at Starlight Ranch where dog owners can dress their pets and enter contests such as owner pet look-a-like, best talent, best costume, fiesta queen and fiesta king while enjoying vendor booths, food trucks, low-cost dog vaccinations from Lone Star Veterinary Services and free microchipping from Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare.  NewsChannel 10

CRIME NEWS

  • John Paul Ortega was convicted of capital murder for stabbing his pregnant girlfriend, Iliana Michelle Garza, in November 2022 at the Toot'n Totum parking lot at I-40 + Lakeside Drive after police learned she had three children and was expecting a fourth; he had been released from prison five months earlier after serving 15 years for earlier crimes.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • The Texas Attorney General’s Office requested a rehearing on Thursday after the U.S. 5th Circuit overturned the murder conviction of Amarillo woman Brittany Holberg on death row due to undisclosed paid informant testimony—she had spent 27 years on death row after prosecutors used recanted evidence from her cellmate.  ABC 7 Amarillo

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Amarillo Symphony welcomed over 10,000 student musicians from Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma to the three-day Greater Southwest Music Festival in downtown Amarillo, which began Thursday and runs until today. The festival features free performances by Amarillo College Choirs Friday at noon and an awards ceremony Saturday at 7 p.m.—highlighting music education.  NewsChannel 10

  • Based on campaign finance reports filed so far in the 2025 City of Amarillo municipal election, 11 major donors contributed nearly half of the $1,908,365 raised for the 15 city council candidates today—six companies received 75% of the spending, with some local firms among the recipients.
