  • About 40 protesters gathered outside Hobby Lobby in Amarillo on May Day — they demanded action on civil rights, workers’ protections and government accountability.  Amarillo Globe-News

CRIME NEWS

  • Amarillo police reported a fatal hit-and-run struck a 73-year-old man on the 700 block of East Amarillo Boulevard around 1:02 a.m. May 3 — a dark-colored SUV-style vehicle traveled west, fled the scene, and officials are asking anyone with information to contact Amarillo CrimeStoppers.  Amarillo Globe-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tim Reid received 60.9% of the votes for City Council Place 1 from all reported precincts, beating Patrick Ryan Miller who got 32%. He said his two-year term will focus on water usage and reducing crime—details will be refined after votes are canvassed on May 13.  Amarillo Tribune
  • Texas residents whose licenses do not show the gold star must visit the DMV to get a new ID by May 7th in order to fly or access secure federal sites — the star in the upper right confirms identity under the REAL ID Act.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Early voting results from May 3rd showed that in the mayoral race Cole Stanley led with 6,516 votes or 59.2 percent while Jason Herrick and Misty Collier received 4,083 votes (37.1 percent) and 303 votes (2.8 percent) respectively—city council, college board, and ISD trustee races also recorded vote counts with clear frontrunners such as Tim Reid and Les Simpson as official results are pending final tallies.  KGNC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Valerie Kiper—a pioneer in nursing who expanded care and led key programs in Amarillo—died April 27 at her home at 67. She advanced neonatal practices and mentored future nurses at Northwest Texas Healthcare System and TTUHSC, and a memorial service will be held May 6 at First Baptist Church.  Amarillo Globe-News
