- ➤ In 2025, only 13% of foster kids in Potter and Randall counties stayed near home while 70% were placed over 50 miles away. Gov. Abbott signed Senate Bill 593 to ease foster rules, and St. Francis Ministries will hold meetings May 11 + May 18 for new applicants. Amarillo Tribune
- ➤ Tomorrow, a barbecue cook-off and fundraiser for Homeless Heroes will be held in Adrian with all-you-can-eat BBQ at noon at 307 Historic Route 66 (across from Dream Maker Station). A car show celebrating Route 66's 100 years will also run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. NewsChannel 10
- ➤ On Wednesday evening, fifth-graders took part in a City Council mock meeting as part of the Little Mayors of BizTown program (a student banged a gavel to approve a motion) and learned how government works. Amarillo Globe-News
- ➤ High Plains Food Bank is teaming with the National Association of Letter Carriers and the USPS to collect nonperishable food donations from residents on Saturday, May 9. - ➤ Casey's General Store will open its second Amarillo location at 1917 Bell Street as construction begins in July and planned reopening is set for August — a new store is also pending at Loop 335 and Bell. 96.9 KISS FM
- ➤ Amarillo-based Toot'n Totum was named the 2026 Convenience Store Chain of the Year by CStore Decisions for its people-first culture and modern store designs. The chain now has more than 125 locations and stands as a local success story. NewsTalk 940 AM

- ➤ Amarillo’s historic brick roads slow traffic while showcasing the city's past with popular stops near 32nd and Lipscomb and on Tyler Street downtown. The weathered streets have withstood extreme heat and winter cold and offer a glimpse into local heritage. 96.9 KISS FM
- ➤ The American Quarter Horse Museum will host Brushes and Brunch this Saturday, May 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 2601 E. Interstate 40. Tickets cost $25 for children (with free caregiver) and $10 for additional adults and include canvas kits, pastries, fruit, refreshments plus museum access. NewsChannel 10

- ➤ Dumas ISD Superintendent Monty Hysinger is retiring and will serve as Superintendent Emeritus until December while mentoring his replacement & ensuring key district projects continue. The board named Executive Director for Curriculum and Instruction Caynon Strickland as the lone finalist. ABC 7 Amarillo
- ➤ Students from many Panhandle schools attended the Panhandle Capitol Leadership Program on Monday at the state Capitol in Austin for an immersive civic education experience hosted by Representative Caroline Fairly. They gained firsthand insight into how government works. NewsChannel 10

- ➤ State Rep. Fairly hosted 19 Panhandle students on May 4 at the State Capitol for the first Panhandle Capitol Leadership Program where students toured government offices, learned how state government works, and shared bill ideas while she plans to continue the program in future years. - ➤ Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into whether local public schools are displaying state-mandated Ten Commandments posters. More than two dozen school districts, including Amarillo, must submit proof of compliance to his office following a federal court ruling — officials warned legal action may follow noncompliance. - ➤ Downtown Women’s Center honored 10 years of the Gratitude House at a moving luncheon on Tuesday, May 5 at the Amarillo Civic Center.
