COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Panhandle Orphan Care Network supports local foster families by providing emergency packages that include clothes, a toy, a blanket, and more to ease the move for children. Founder Matt Darrah said the nonprofit relies on community funding to keep helping families + bringing hope to those in need.  NewsChannel 10

CRIME NEWS

  • Just before 7 p.m. on Sunday, officers responded to shots fired at Granite at 34th Apartments in the 3300 block of Eddy Street in Amarillo + two people sustained gunshot wounds when a man with a gun fired from a vehicle and then fled the scene.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Moore County Crime Stoppers is asking for help finding Dylan Blake Casarez, who is wanted for a driving while intoxicated charge in Potter County and a theft charge in Moore County, as officials say he has had multiple encounters with law enforcement, shows violent tendencies and drug abuse, is an escape risk (he is also known by names including Dylon Casarez, Litt-Homer, and X) and has ties to Dumas.  NewsChannel 10
  • Amarillo police released new details on a Mother's Day shooting at Granite at 34th Apartments when officers arrived at (6:52 p.m.) to calls of shots fired and found two men wounded in the parking lot after a gunman fled; detectives are still investigating the case.  NewsChannel 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Amarillo’s Starlight Theater will run for ten weeks from June through August at Sam Houston Park, offering free live music, food trucks, and vendors. The event will feature local bands including Solano Project on June 3, with shows scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m.—the weekly lineup is set—providing a planned summer program.  96.9 KISS FM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 1,000 students graduated from Amarillo College on Friday, May 9 at the Amarillo Civic Center during spring commencement ceremonies. Two student speakers delivered moving addresses on hope and perseverance, marking a milestone for the college as graduates begin new chapters.  Amarillo Globe-News

  • SB 22, passed by the Texas Senate in late April, would double the state's film incentive program by giving larger grants to companies that film in Texas—supporters expect it may create thousands of jobs—and the bill is now in the House Culture, Recreation and Tourism Committee.  Amarillo Tribune
  • Alex Fairly, an Amarillo businessman and GOP megadonor, has influenced Texas politics by donating millions, shifting his stance on the House speaker race, and launching a $20 million PAC to back hardline candidates.
