COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Amarillo farmers' markets will open this summer, offering fresh produce, homemade jams, and local crafts (a taste of Texas Panhandle charm).  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Harriet Dunlap knitted over 600 colorful blankets that comforted children in foster care served by Amarillo Area CASA for more than a decade. Her handmade work gave children one piece of home amid frequent moves — and local leaders urge continued support for foster families after she died in December.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • On May 13, the United Way of Amarillo & Canyon gave a $25,000 check to the Amarillo Women’s Network at the Amarillo Club. The donation will support the Network’s scholarship program for local women.  NewsChannel 10
  • Ceta Canyon Camp and Retreat Center has added new AI cameras + updated emergency alert systems to boost safety for campers ahead of summer. The upgrades cost over $385,000 and were funded by local donors, with plans to install 20 more cameras by this time next year.  NewsChannel 10
  • Llano Cemetery will host its annual Peace Officer Memorial Day ceremony this Friday, May 15 at 11:00 a.m. at 2900 South Hayes Street (Fields of Honor) to honor fallen peace officers.  NewsChannel 10
  • The 2026 PIT Count conducted on Jan. 30 shows 728 individuals experiencing homelessness in Amarillo including 124 first-timers, with 418 sheltering + 310 unsheltered. Officials say rising housing costs and economic pressures are part of the trend.  ABC 7 Amarillo

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artists, interns and students are painting a 400-foot Route 66 mural called '66 Stories from Route 66' under the Sixth Avenue underpass near the Multimodal Transit Station to share history. The mural — funded by grants — is expected to finish in June before the National Route 66 Centennial Celebration.  NewsChannel 10

  • Golden Plains Community School in north Amarillo will open this fall for pre-kindergarten to first grade, located at Hillcrest Baptist Church + offering nature-based learning and family support. Classes begin Aug. 18.  Amarillo Tribune
  • Today, Amarillo College celebrates 75 years of its LVN program at The Church at Quail Creek (VN at 2 p.m., ADN at 6 p.m.). Graduations featuring Racheal Garcia at 3 p.m. and Mallory Moore at 7 p.m. take place tomorrow at the Civic Center Coliseum.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Ceta Canyon Camp & Retreat Center held a ribbon-cutting ceremony (joining Hidden Falls) as one of two Texas Panhandle camps that met new state rules to offer summer camp activities this season.   • Texas Tech University is marking the 30th anniversary of its Hodge School of Pharmacy with an event Friday at Amarillo Civic Center Heritage Room that will honor alumni and community partners, while its pharmacy and veterinary schools hold commencements Saturday and Sunday at the local auditorium.  Amarillo Globe-News

  • Realtor.com data shows Potter County home sale prices rose to a median of $178,125 in February, 2.4% higher than January; single-family prices increased 3.1% and recorded sales grew 7.5% from last February.  Amarillo Globe-News
