COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wheat producers attended a field day in Bushland to learn about new wheat varieties with enhanced resistance to disease, pests, and drought. They will use insights from the event (with rain expected from El Niño) to decide on seed choices for fall planting.  ABC 7 Amarillo

  • On May 14, the Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual BusinessConnection tradeshow at the Civic Center + nearly 250 local businesses connected with customers via booths, giveaways and scam warnings while community groups like the Amarillo Symphony also participated.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Fermi Inc filed a suit in Texas Business Courts Wednesday night & argues that a bylaw amendment bars former CEO Toby Neugebauer from adding five board members by a simple majority vote. A conference between the parties is scheduled next week.  Amarillo Tribune

  • Ruben visits with local artist Henry Kulczyk at Gallery on 66 to view limited-edition prints by John Paquette & his own paintings. The master carpenter, who began painting in the 90s, shares his passion as he brings timeless art to the Panhandle.  NewsChannel 10

  • Storybridge Summer Storytime returns to Amarillo every Wednesday starting Wednesday, May 27 at 10 a.m., offering free stories, snacks, and books for kids at rotating locations (Buffs and Balls at Buffalo Stadium on May 27 and Hometown Heroes at West Hills Park on June 3).  96.9 KISS FM
  • Texas Tech is holding its largest spring commencement with 5,584 graduates across events in Amarillo and Lubbock. Ceremonies started yesterday and continue through Sunday, with the School of Veterinary Medicine set to meet at the Amarillo Civic Center Auditorium.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Amarillo College has opened registration for its Kids' College summer camps starting June 1 in Amarillo, Dumas, and Hereford. The camps will offer hands-on sessions in science, art, music, and more for students in grades K–12 (call 806-371-2920 for details).  NewsChannel 10
  • More than 1,600 West Texas A&M students will join four commencement ceremonies in Canyon today and tomorrow. The events begin at 10 a.m. with live streams, sign-language interpreters, and speeches from university leaders + local alumni.  Amarillo Globe-News

  • Randall County Sheriff's Office ordered evacuations yesterday along Hungate Road to FM 1714 and Arnot Road to FM 1705, with orders extending north and east to Brown Road due to wildfires as officials continue to monitor conditions.  ABC 7 Amarillo

  • Amarillo’s latest Point-in-Time count shows 728 individuals experiencing homelessness, up from 641 last year, with more now sheltered than outdoors. Transformation Park CEO Mark Zimmerman said the future addition of the neighboring Street Center will increase available resources.  NewsChannel 10
  • The Amarillo Chamber of Commerce will host a town hall on data centers on May 21 at Innovation Outpost—speakers including former Texas Land Commissioner George P.   • Amarillo’s Parks and Recreation Board met on May 13 to review park-renaming guidelines for East Park, get an update on the aquatic study for pools, and plan to livestream meetings beginning next month (to boost community feedback).  Amarillo Tribune
