COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Amarillo College donated $10,000 to the Texas Panhandle First Responders Memorial to honor fallen police captain Frank Clements, who died May 16th, 1985 while directing campus traffic & protecting the community. The gift will help complete final fundraising and design steps before construction starts at the downtown site at 11th and Polk & local officials say the tribute is a fitting reminder of his service.  Amarillo Globe-News

  • Amarillo food truck Cow — known for its ice cream treats — is opening a new shop inside the former Marble Slab location at 201-M Westgate Parkway on Soncy tomorrow; the shop will serve ice cream, panini, and a kids' menu while operating from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and closing on Sundays.  96.9 KISS FM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Hoodoo Mural Festival is moving from downtown to Arts in the Sunset to provide more space and improved security—ensuring a safer setting for family-friendly activities. Organizers are accepting applications from muralists, musicians and vendors as the festival will take place on Saturday, Sept. 27 with expanded art and music programming.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Amarillo designer Matthew Rosas turned a $30 dusty sewing machine from an estate sale into his Momentum of Roses upcycled fashion brand—he used thrifted materials to create bold, one-of-a-kind clothes. He held the Pearl Dreams event on May 9 and 10 at Arts in the Sunset—local models showcased his designs while proceeds supported a child advocacy center.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Mixed media artist Improper Tear will hold their first solo art exhibition Paints and Portraits at Idol Art Studio on May 17 at 7 p.m.—the show features collages and portraits of local community members including activist Lindsay London, and the artwork will stay on display until sold.  Amarillo Tribune

  • River Road High School salutatorian Radai Valdez overcame challenges — such as being born with one arm and raised in a Spanish-speaking home — while excelling in academics and three sports. She will attend UT-Austin to study law and aims to become an attorney who defends those in need.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • On May 14, 10 seniors at Tascosa High School took the oath to enlist in a special ceremony attended by family members and service representatives, marking a district effort to honor military service. The event was part of the Amarillo ISD College, Career and Readiness initiative that includes ROTC programs at the city's high schools—highlighting the support offered to students choosing a military path.  Amarillo Globe-News

  • The City of Amarillo has launched a new website that offers real-time data on eight playa lakes—updated every 15 minutes using sensors, cameras and rain gauges to track lake levels and rainfall.   • TxDOT said the westbound I-40 frontage road at Adkisson Road near Bushland will be closed today for crews setting bridge beams. Officials urge drivers to slow down through all work zones during the closure.  NewsChannel 10
