COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Texas Panhandle War Memorial is set to hold a ceremony on Monday, May 25 at 11:30 a.m. where hundreds will gather to honor fallen service members through an invocation, flyover, and guest speaker while also recognizing Gold Star families.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center will host the 16th annual National VA2K Walk + Roll event tomorrow, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on its front lawn at 6010 Amarillo Blvd. W. The free event features a 1.24-mile walk + family-friendly activities to support homeless veterans.  NewsChannel 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews are mopping up the 750 acre Blue Diamond Fire in Oldham County which is 50% contained; evacuations and road closures near Tascosa Road have ended, yet officials warn spread potential remains and power crews are restoring service after the contained Hungate Fire in Randall County.  NewsChannel 10

  • Brush with Art is moving from its Civic Circle spot to a larger space in the former Vexus building at 2221 I-40 Frontage Rd to host bigger events, with local owners Heidi and Casey planning an elevated creative experience (they have five kids) for the community soon.  NewsTalk 940 AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Storybridge Summer Storytime returns to give kids free books, snacks, and reading fun every Wednesday at 10 a.m. from May 27 through July 29 at different local landmarks (each with its own theme).  NewsTalk 940 AM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildfires in the Texas Panhandle saw the Hunggate Fire merge with the Chocolate Chip Fire in Randall County, burning 34,124 acres and reaching 95% containment on Monday. Other blazes (including the 5-acre Stinky Fire in Potter County) are being closely monitored in nearby areas.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • On May 18, the Hunggate Fire merged with the Chocolate Chip Fire to burn 34,124 acres near Canyon, destroying seven occupied homes, three unoccupied homes, and 13 other buildings (95% contained by early Monday) while crews continue to mop up and patrol the area and over 600 homes were saved.  Amarillo Globe-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Texas Department of Agriculture announced that it is providing aid for farmers, ranchers & agribusinesses affected by wildfires in the Panhandle. Commissioner Sid Miller urged Texans to stay alert and follow evacuation orders as first responders work to protect property.  NewsChannel 10
  • Spectrum WT, a student group at West Texas A&M, petitioned the 5th Circuit Court for an en banc hearing after a judge dismissed its planned on-campus drag show fundraiser. The appeal could set clear guidelines for public colleges that have banned similar performances.  Amarillo Tribune

  • A 12-year-old girl from Amarillo is walking again after months of rehabilitation in Houston following the discovery of a spinal tumor. She began moving on March 20 and now looks forward to returning to her favorite activities + riding horses and bathing goats.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • TRICARE now allows emergency prescription refills for beneficiaries in Randall County through May 25 due to wildfires. Beneficiaries should bring their prescription bottles to any TRICARE retail pharmacy or call Express Scripts (1-877-363-1303) for help.  NewsChannel 10
