COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Forty-three teams played on May 16th at Ross Rogers Golf Course — the only fundraiser for Kids Café — which serves up to 1,600 meals a day for students and others. The event raised roughly $100,000 that supports summer meal programs partnering with local groups to feed children when school is out.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Amarillo police honored Bailey Dunn by attending her graduation ceremony at Amarillo High School Tuesday night—Bailey is the daughter of fallen officer Sgt. Michael Dunn who died in 2021 after contracting COVID on duty. Her brother Reagan, a member of the 104th Amarillo Police Academy, also attended along with fellow officers.  ABC 7 Amarillo

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Amarillo Fire Department responded Sunday at 10:03 p.m. to a fire at a vacant residence at 217 North Pierce Street where multiple 911 calls reported visible flames and smoke before the first unit arrived—18 personnel and six suppression vehicles fought the blaze with no injuries reported while an investigation continues.  KGNC

CRIME NEWS

  • Police in Amarillo found 11 pounds of cocaine in a suitcase during a free air sniff test at the Greyhound Bus Station and arrested Dedrick Jermaine Jones in the station restroom—he said he bought the drugs in Los Angeles and his case will face a federal grand jury.  NewsTalk 940 AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum in Amarillo educates visitors on the history and culture of the Quarter Horse by offering field trips and programs that teach kids about horse care and the role of the Chisholm Trail. Established in 1991, the museum also serves as the public face of the American Quarter Horse Association, which has registered nearly 6 million horses.  NewsChannel 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Thirty-six West Texas A&M University nursing graduates were honored at a pinning ceremony (held May 16 at Legacy Hall in Canyon) that marked their shift from student life to nursing. Most graduates, who recited the Nightingale Pledge and plan to work on the Texas Panhandle, join a program with a 92 percent National Council Licensure Examination pass rate (well above state averages) as they start their careers.  Amarillo Globe-News

  • Residents in Amarillo have discovered that a family of beavers has built a new home at Thompson Park, marking their return to the area after more than 5,000 years. The animals help manage water flow+ reduce wildfire risks, and visitors are advised to keep a safe distance to let them work undisturbed.  NewsTalk 940 AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pantex completed the first unit of the new B61-13 nuclear bomb four months after finishing the B61-12, marking a key step in its modernization work. The milestone, achieved with PanTeXas Deterrence LLC, will lead to full production this summer—targeting completion by fiscal year 2027.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Amarillo city offices including City Hall, Municipal Court, and library locations will be closed on Memorial Day while City Transit will not run and residential trash pickup shifts to Tuesday—commercial routes and curbside collection will also be adjusted, and golf complexes remain open at their regular hours.  NewsTalk 940 AM
