COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A traveling tribute called Remembering Our Fallen is at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial for Memorial Day weekend and shows 5,473 names on 35 towers to honor soldiers. Board member Mendell Schelin said the exhibit took seven to eight months to set up—it will be free for the public through Monday.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Amarillo held a food truck showdown on May 16 at John Stiff Memorial Park with more than 4,500 votes cast by local residents. The top 10 food trucks will receive priority placement at the annual Independence Day +1 celebration on July 5 and all trucks will be invited back for a summer event.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Center City of Amarillo will launch its 30th season of High Noon on the Square on June 4 with local performers presenting free concerts on the Potter County Courthouse lawn (501 S. Fillmore), and lunch tickets will be available at 11:45 a.m. for $10. Each Wednesday in June and July will feature different acts and food options to bring the community together.  NewsChannel 10

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Workers at the JBS plant in Cactus, Texas saw their pensions restored and wages raised along with safety improvements under a UFCW contract ratified May 22. The deal covers 26,000 employees at 14 plants and creates a new operator-managed pension fund — a first in nearly 40 years.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Amarillo’s Pony Express Burrito has begun its process of opening at the former Pizzeria Nomad site near 34th and Georgia with owner Noe Trejo stating that a banner sign is now in place—this marks the first step before the store officially opens. Locals hope a fresh mural will soon brighten the empty wall—adding new color to the neighborhood.  96.9 KISS FM

CRIME NEWS

  • A 54-year-old man with a prior sex offense conviction was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison on May 20 for possessing child pornography involving prepubescent minors — he admitted to storing nearly 1,400 videos and over 71,000 images on his devices.  NewsChannel 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Amarillo Botanical Gardens will host Music In The Gardens concerts every Thursday from June through August, featuring local musical acts with shows running from 7 PM to 9 PM. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for members and free for children under 10.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • The traveling 'Remembering Our Fallen' exhibit honors U.S. troops killed in the War on Terror with 35 towers listing 5,000 names — including 29 Texas Panhandle veterans. It will be on display at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial until 6 p.m. Monday through Memorial Day.  ABC 7 Amarillo
