  • Big Jim’s Pizza in Amarillo turned a negative order mix-up into a positive community service when a customer mistakenly placed a $250 order and berated staff, prompting the store to donate 10 pizzas to shelters and night shifters—an act that benefited those in need.  NewsTalk 940 AM

  • Boy Scout Troop 10, Cub Scout Pack 10, cemetery staff and Patriot Guard Riders placed flags to honor over 3,000 veterans at Memorial Park Cemetery on May 24th — including 31 who passed away in the last year.   • At Oldham County Airport in Vega, a 1957 Piper PA-18 hit a beacon pole during landing around 3:40 p.m. Monday, injuring a 41-year-old pilot and a 14-year-old passenger who were taken to BSA Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries — the FAA will investigate the crash—.  ABC 7 Amarillo

CRIME NEWS

  • On Memorial Day, a driver at an Amarillo Walmart parking lot discovered a zip tie on her car—seen as a possible kidnapping warning—and after noticing a suspicious man nearby, she got help from a store employee who checked her vehicle before she safely left.  NewsTalk 940 AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Texas Senate approved the House bill that will scrap the STAAR test in schools and replace it with a shorter exam to track student progress at the start, middle and end of the year, as it did Tuesday with a vote of 23 to 8 (vote count). Now the House will decide whether to accept the Senate changes or meet in a closed-door conference to determine next steps.  ABC 7 Amarillo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas House Bill 748 passed unanimously in the House and will be sent to the governor’s desk today to protect sexual abuse survivors from signing NDAs—this bill came after a local family refused to sign an NDA during past abuse proceedings and will take effect retroactively on September 1.  NewsChannel 10
  • Potter County Detention Center failed its state inspection for overcrowding — some inmates did not even have beds — and Sheriff Brian Thomas said the jail must develop an action plan within 30 days to fix the issue before further state action is taken.  Amarillo Tribune
  • The City of Amarillo estimates it needs $3 billion to replace the Hollywood Road Wastewater Treatment Facility built in 1963 after flood damage and rising capacity needs—city officials said the plant now treats 12 million gallons per day, up from 4.5 million. Construction is planned for 2027 with a rate study due by November to help set water bill increases.  ABC 7 Amarillo
