- ➤ The third annual Texas Route 66 Festival will begin on June 5 with the Coors Ranch Rodeo at the Amarillo Tri-State Fairgrounds and run through June 14. Organizers said the ten-day festival will feature car shows, live music, local vendors — and family-friendly activities. NewsChannel 10
- ➤ A new resource center for Amarillo's homeless population will be built north of Transformation Park on Bowie and 5th Avenue to offer daytime shelter, meals, computer access, and on-site medical care. The 21,000 sq. ft. facility (named for Joe and Laura Street) will open (late 2027) as financing and lease agreements are finalized. NewsChannel 10
- ➤ Amarillo Area CASA will launch its Heatwave of Hope fundraiser on June 1 to benefit children in foster care. The fundraiser will run through June 15 and invites residents from Armstrong, Briscoe, Carson, Hutchinson, Potter, Randall, and Swisher counties to donate for a chance to win prizes — including local gift certificates and summer-themed baskets — to support CASA's mission. - ➤ Victoria Carrillo has served as Amarillo’s assistant superintendent for Solid Waste Disposal for three years and manages trash from the transfer station to the landfill at 16250 Bezner Dr.—she ensures compacting trash does not harm the air or groundwater. - ➤ The Panhandle Auto Burglary and Theft Unit will host a free trailer stamping event on May 31 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Pride Home Center at 3503 NE 24th Avenue — the event will stamp VIN and personal identification numbers to help identify trailers if they are stolen. NewsChannel 10
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Groundbreaking for the new state mental health hospital has begun as dirt is being moved to prepare the $159 million facility for 75 beds — 50 for those deemed criminally insane near Amarillo. Potter County Judge Nancy Tanner said the project will let patients receive treatment close to home and ease jail overcrowding, with the groundbreaking set for June 10 and construction expected to finish by July 2027.
