  • Family-owned Tanya’s Burgers and Chelas will open soon at 2706 S Osage Street as it transitions from a food truck to a permanent storefront, offering burgers + authentic Mexican food + cold chelas.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Canyon Popcorn Co. at 2304 4th Avenue will close its doors on May 31 after it could not secure a buyer or lease, and sales on remaining inventory have begun. The business, which opened in 2020, has been a community favorite.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Ponto Gaucho will open its Hillside restaurant offering a Brazilian steakhouse by late June or early July. The venue will serve endless meats + a salad bar, bringing a fresh dining option for hungry locals.  96.9 KISS FM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Amarillo College will host free Jim Laughlin June Jazz concerts starting June 2 at 7:30 p.m. on the Washington Street Campus Experimental Theatre Porch; the events will include scheduled sets, an After Hours Jam, and a rain contingency indoors, and locals may bring lawn chairs + blankets.  NewsChannel 10
  • Longtime farm editor Duane Howell died May 27 at age 95, leaving a legacy in cotton policy and agriculture journalism. He began his career at the Abilene Reporter-News, later serving at the Avalanche-Journal and writing for DTN Progressive Farmer until 2024.  Amarillo Globe-News

  • Gas prices dropped across Texas after the Memorial Day rush as oil prices fell below $100 a barrel, placing Amarillo’s average at $3.88 per gallon + down 12 cents from last week, though prices remain more than a dollar higher than last year.  NewsTalk 940 AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Amarillo Public Library will launch its annual Summer Reading Club *‘Unearth a Story’* on June 1 by offering free programs and prizes for all ages, including a rubber duck and literacy log for toddlers.  NewsChannel 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting Monday, June 1, crews will work on roads in Amarillo, causing delays on southbound I-27 near Rockwell Rd until Thursday and a four-way stop at Bell St + 45th Ave until Friday; patching on US 60, FM 1912, and Tascosa Road is scheduled through Wednesday.  NewsChannel 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Slug Bug Ranch turned purple on May 29 at 1415 Sunrise Drive when community agencies and the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services gathered to raise awareness about elder abuse and self-neglect.   • Family Support Services, an Amarillo nonprofit, has seen a rise in mental health counselling demand and is fundraising to support its six full-time counselors and additional services for survivors and teens.
