COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Amarillo Zoo reopened after a monthlong closure for upgrades including a new gift shop and education center to help beat the heat. The bobcat enclosure will soon be renovated and Boo at the Zoo is planned for October (giving families fresh reasons to visit).  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Critter Worx, a non-profit for animal education (raising $3,000 for habitats), will move from T-Anchor Flea Market to Westgate Mall where families will soon meet snakes, lizards, and more. The space is set to open in about two months and needs community support.  96.9 KISS FM
  • Amarillo Area CASA will hold its Heatwave of Hope summer fundraiser on Saturday, June 13 at Tripp’s Harley Davidson Hog Room (10 a.m.–1 p.m.) on 6040 W I-40. Brunch and bingo pack tickets cost $35 to support CASA volunteers assisting children in foster care.  NewsChannel 10
  • Two weeks ago a landfill fire destroyed 52 homes and damaged 25 more over 2,500 acres near Amarillo, and local relief groups are now asking for financial donations to help survivors rebuild their lives.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • The Hope and Healing Place is accepting applications for its free SKY Camp for grieving children (ages 7 to 17) at Ceta Canyon Camp in July; the camp offers indoor and outdoor activities to help them cope, and applications close on June 30.  NewsChannel 10

  • Sakura Tokyo is launching its mobile hibachi unit to bring its live-fire cooking experience to homes and events in Amarillo. The service follows the restaurant's recent move to the Soncy location + offers a unique way to celebrate special occasions.  96.9 KISS FM
  • 909 S. Madison has seen many businesses open and close in Amarillo for 20 years (some believe a local curse explains the high turnover). New tenants like Miguelitos may break the cycle if they gain lasting community support.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • The 54-year-old Merle Norman store is moving from its 28-year Soncy Rd location after its lease ended and will relocate to 7606 SW 45th, with the new location expected to open in June (support local business).  NewsTalk 940 AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Amarillo will host the Texas Route 66 Festival from Jun. 4 to Jun. 13 to celebrate Route 66’s 100th anniversary. The ten-day event will feature parades, classic car shows, live music, rodeos & cattle drives that attract visitors to the Texas Panhandle.  96.9 KISS FM
  • The annual High Noon on the Square concert series returns to downtown Amarillo tomorrow and runs through July 29 at Potter County Courthouse lawn at 501 S. Fillmore. Free noon shows feature live music and food vendors, including hamburgers and sandwiches, from 12 until 1 p.m.  NewsChannel 10

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Amarillo Economic Development Corporation hosts a public meet and greet today from 5:30 p.m. + 6:30 p.m. at City Hall Council Chambers where local residents can meet new CEO Andreas Eckstein, PhD and learn about his plans to boost business recruitment and workforce development.  NewsChannel 10
  • Bell Textron laid off about 30 employees at its Amarillo facility over the weekend to realign its business with market realities. The company has not confirmed if more cuts will occur as economic challenges persist.  NewsTalk 940 AM

HEALTH NEWS

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield removed Amarillo Medical Specialists from its network on May 1, leaving about 4,000 patients without in-network care. The clinic said stalled negotiations on new rates led them to contact state officials for guidance as patients search for new providers.  Amarillo Tribune
