COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Race a Cop event, now in its third year, will take place on June 14 in Amarillo with gates opening at 6 p.m. and a $10 admission fee for those aged 13 and above + organizers say the event will offer a safe, legal space to race and educate participants on street racing dangers.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • John Ward Memorial Park’s playground was closed on June 2 for summer resurfacing repairs due to years of wear—visitors can still use the park’s walking trail, fishing areas, and Discovery Center until the playground reopens.  96.9 KISS FM
  • The 10-day Texas Route 66 Festival will begin on June 5 and run through June 14 with events including High Noon on the Square, bus tours, and art shows. Visit Amarillo officials said more than 60 local businesses will join the festival, and the big finale on 6th Street—hosted by Bellvis—will cap off the celebration.  Amarillo Tribune

  • Randall County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested eight individuals on Sunday—39-year-old Fredi Arturo Codinez Gonzales at 12:42 a.m. for driving while intoxicated, 32-year-old Colter Augustus-McRea Mast at 6:35 a.m. for DUI, 52-year-old Amy Flores at 6:44 a.m. on multiple DUI charges, 42-year-old Jesse Anthony Espinosa at 1:36 p.m. for assault, 27-year-old Gracie Laura Jewell on a federal hold at 6:18 p.m., 25-year-old Corbin Reese Roye for controlled substance possession at 6:55 p.m., 30-year-old Stephen Michael Jones at 8:12 p.m. for criminal trespass, and 28-year-old Cayron Lentez Nelson on a federal hold at 11:59 p.m.  KGNC
  • On Sunday, Potter County deputies arrested several individuals at different times and locations—including a 37-year-old near State Loop 335 for DUI and interference of public duties—and later charged suspects with stalking, indecent exposure, controlled substance offenses, and other crimes+ arrests occurred from early morning until evening with ages ranging from 19 to 61+.  KGNC

  • Region 16 held its 2025 School Safety Summit in Amarillo with 250 educators, local law enforcement and administrators gathering to learn proactive measures in school safety. The summit featured keynote speaker Dr. Peter Langman and breakout sessions on physical security, mental health, cyber safety and drug prevention — steps aimed at better protecting students.  NewsChannel 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Canyon City Commission meets Tuesday at 4:30 in the Commission Chambers (301 16th Street) to get public comments and vote on adding territory to the city. They will also decide on a subdivision waiver, rezoning for Spring Canyon Unit 4, a FEMA grant to hire three full-time firefighters, a fee schedule amendment and a TXDOT maintenance deal for railroad approaches.  KGNC
  • Crews will break ground on the new Panhandle State Hospital at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 10 at 6610 W. Amarillo Blvd—Potter County Judge Nancy Tanner said Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Sen. Kevin Sparks will attend the small public ceremony. The $159 million project is planned to include 75 beds and is expected to add 300—400 jobs as it aims to improve local mental health care and reduce long jail stays.  Amarillo Tribune

  • Amarillo now has more donut shops as new places open while Donut Stop still serves red cherry donuts that many locals love. Got Donuts is building two new stores — a sign of more choices in town— and residents are enjoying the growing variety.  96.9 KISS FM
