- ➤ On July 18, Amarillo will host a free outdoor screening of Grease at Sam Houston Park — families can bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy free popcorn as the film begins at dark. NewsTalk 940 AM
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ On Saturday, Potter County Deputies arrested 10 people including 29-year-old Tyrone Wayne Terrell for driving while intoxicated near the 1700 block of Northeast 16 and 25-year-old Silvia Fabian for abandoning a child—others were charged with aggravated assault, criminal trespass, non-support, fugitive status, controlled substance possession, reckless behavior and resisting arrest. - ➤ Clara Sneed’s new book Because This is Texas tells the true story of the Sneed-Boyce feud that once sparked fierce conflict around Amarillo—she researched the tale over 30 years using old files—and it has reached No. 1 ranking on charts in Canada and Australia. Amarillo Globe-News
- ➤ Amarillo drivers still enjoy the quirky street signs (installed in the 1990s) by Stanley Marsh that display unusual sayings along busy roads. Although many have been removed or painted over, several remain (preserving a unique piece of local art) to surprise motorists today. NewsTalk 940 AM
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ TxDOT Amarillo released its 'Know Before You Go' update for the week starting today—detailing ramp closures and lane work on I-27, I-40, SL 335, SH 15, and SH 136 that will affect drivers from today through later this week. The update notes the southbound I-27 ramp at Rockwell Road is closed through the end of July while overnight pavement work on Tuesday and Wednesday and a high-mast lighting project on Thursday will require drivers to take alternate routes. - ➤ Potter County Commissioners meet today at 9:00 a.m. in the Commissioners’ Courtroom at 350 Southeast 6th, Suite 2141 to review the agenda including the County ARPA Committee report, a lease with DUOS Edge for an AI Data Center and several county projects. They will also discuss the Santa Fe Building Fiber upgrade, the Jim Line Road Project, a Tax Assessor-Collector report, an inmate housing contract with Lubbock County + updates on employment and the Detention Center. - ➤ Former councilmember Tom Scherlen now attends City Council meetings from the audience after losing his Place 3 seat in June and reflects on a term marked by reform and a strong commitment to listening to residents—he said serving the people is a full-time duty and plans to stay politically active by April. - ➤ Texas passed Senate Bill 666 in March which bans the sale of nitrous oxide to anyone under 21 and requires retailers to post warning signs in both English and Spanish. The law addresses nitrous oxide abuse for recreational use and will go into effect on September 1. NewsTalk 940 AM
