- ➤ Families in Amarillo can shop at the Just Between Friends sale—running from July 24 to 26—at the Civic Center where discounted baby gear, kids' clothes and toys are available. The event also allows community members to sign up to sell lightly used items—helping save money on back-to-school needs. NewsTalk 940 AM
- ➤ Homeless Heroes raised $300,000 in the past 90 days to buy the old Astro Motel and turn it into housing for homeless veterans in Amarillo—renovations will start soon to add daily support services, classes, and pet kennels, with the project set to be operational by Veterans Day. ABC 7 Amarillo
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Leonard Franco (31) died at the scene of a crash at I-40 and Lakeside early Friday when his Jeep Liberty was struck by a tractor-trailer exiting the Pilot Travel Center and officers’ life-saving efforts did not revive him. Amarillo Globe-News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Amarillo police raided three massage parlors yesterday and arrested 60-year-old Zhi Zhi Luna and 56-year-old Zhen Li Parr for aggravated promotion of prostitution—Parr also faces a felony count for promotion of prostitution. NewsTalk 940 AM
- ➤ DPS found hexamine, hydrogen peroxide, and citric acid along with guns and several hundred rounds in the home of 18-year-old Kevin Hunt, who was accused of planning to kill people at the July 4th parade in Canyon, while an Amarillo College chemistry professor said the case raised concerns over the easy availability of these materials — federal agencies including the FBI and DHS were involved. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The old Potter County Courts Building demolition is nearly complete as one tower remains and downtown streets are reduced to one lane for safety. Potter County Judge Nancy Tanner said the demolition will be finished by Monday while a free parking lot (216 parking spaces with 21 ADA accessible spaces) and new landscaping (34 new trees) will replace the building, with the project set to finish in April. - ➤ TXDOT announced that the southbound I-27 ramp from Rockwell Road will be closed for construction through Friday, July 25—drivers needing access should follow Country Club Road/Buffalo Stadium Road—and traffic on southbound I-27 will face an overnight closure on Tuesday, July 22 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. for barrier work.
