- ➤ On July 19 to 20, more than 30 local artists brought music and color to the vacant Astro Motel—which is a historic Route 66 site slated to become veteran housing. The grassroots art show, hosted by Amarillo artists JMF and Juan Dash Jimenez, featured murals, live art, and a charity raffle that raised funds for a local cancer patient. Amarillo Globe-News

- ➤ At about 3:30 a.m. today, an explosion at Panhandle Milling in Dawn killed one person and burned three others as emergency crews quickly responded and closed FM 809 (from FM 1062 to FM 2587) while rescuers later recovered a victim from the collapsed building. ABC 7 Amarillo

- ➤ Southwest Amarillo will soon have two new banking options as Chase Bank will start building its branch at 8701 S. Coulter in January and open it in October while Texas Tech Credit Union will begin construction off Lexington Square in October and be finished by June—boosting modern services for residents. The Chase facility will cost $2.7 million and the credit union building will cost $2.4 million—offering more choices for local financial planning. 96.9 KISS FM

- ➤ Amarillo fire officials said a hut-style building at 2113 Southwest 3rd Avenue burned early Wednesday after an intentionally set fire; firefighters rescued one occupant who was treated with a cyano-kit (expected to make a full recovery) and investigators are assessing significant property loss (damage estimates pending). - ➤ Texas House Bill 1481 bans personal communication devices for students in Texas school districts — each school will set rules on storing devices with exceptions for medical needs. Local Rep Caroline Fairly said the law aims to reduce distractions and improve student performance while Amarillo ISD confirmed its current policy meets the new guidelines. NewsChannel 10

- ➤ Today, the City of Amarillo worked with the Mitchener family after repeated crashes on a dangerous S-curve near the Amarillo Country Club — the city and TxDOT installed flashing lights and began installing a guardrail that should finish by Friday. - ➤ The Amarillo City Council held its Tuesday meeting where Laura Storrs explained the updates to the city's financial website and payroll error — while Doug Nelson of AEDC discussed economic growth plans and a board vacancy set to be filled in a special Aug. 7 meeting. The council also approved a $7,395,120 contract for Fire Station 14 to cut response times in the medical district — and finalized a tax abatement agreement with International Aerospace Coatings to expand its airport facility and add about 65 jobs.
