COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday evening at Texas Roadhouse, officers from Amarillo and Canyon police departments partnered with Special Olympics athletes at the 17th annual Tip-A-Cop fundraiser—raising $4,943 to help support the athletes' training and competition goals.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • The Panhandle Kids Count Lions Club will host a free sensory-friendly pool night on August 2 at the High Plains Retreat Center in Canyon for families with children and young adults with disabilities; dinner will be provided.  NewsChannel 10
  • Kids Inc. announced that the Paul F. and Virginia J. Engler Foundation donated $2 million to support a new multi-purpose sports complex at Rockrose Sports Park — a section will be named in their honor and groundbreaking could happen by October.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Amarillo SPCA needs foster parents and donations as the shelter remains full because of a busy baby season and a funding shortage—local staff say expensive veterinary bills and repeated returns of adopted animals highlight the urgent need for help.  ABC 7 Amarillo

  • Sticky Chikky is set to expand with a new location off 34th and Osage after a year of local support. Business owner Jordan Snider pushed ahead with the plan after a motorcycle accident took his father and injured his mother—there is no set opening date yet.  NewsTalk 940 AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The House recently rescinded $1.1 billion for public broadcasting, putting local stations Panhandle PBS and High Plains Public Radio at risk of losing key federal funds. High Plains Public Radio will lose a $222,000 grant that covers 15% of its next budget and Panhandle PBS will see nearly one third of its budget cut by Oct. 1—both are set to reassess spending and seek private donations to sustain local programming.  Amarillo Tribune
  • TxDOT warned drivers that road and lane closures will affect key routes throughout this week—Monday the westbound Loop 225 exit was closed for high-mast lighting and today the left two lanes of southbound I-27 at 26th Street are closed for concrete repairs—and repairs on US-87, I-40 frontage roads and SH 15 are expected to finish by August 1.  NewsChannel 10
