  • Community members are gathering today at Pleasant Valley Park for a north side cleanup that starts at 8 a.m.—volunteers will work along River Road toward Hastings and Echo near Pleasant Valley Elementary where trash has built up and lunch plus cleanup tools will be provided.  ABC 7 Amarillo

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Long John Silvers reopened in Amarillo last Friday at Bell Street and 45th Ave—drawing excited crowds. Traffic backed up 11 blocks an hour after the restaurant opened as fans lined up for the chain's comeback.  ABC 7 Amarillo

CRIME NEWS

  • Potter County authorities extradited a 31-year-old inmate, already serving a 25-year sentence in Louisiana, on July 31 for his alleged role in a 2022 murder at the Camelot Inn that killed 24-year-old Brandon Slade Ward (he faces charges of capital murder and aggravated robbery).  NewsChannel 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • A screening of The Sundowners, a classic Western filmed entirely in Palo Duro Canyon, will show today at Sad Monkey Mercantile to raise funds for the Amarillo International Film Festival set for Oct 9-11, and tickets cost $10 at the door. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. plus food and drink will be available for purchase.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • The Barfield Hotel in downtown Amarillo will be named a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark as its new marker is set to be installed by Aug.5—honoring its legacy as the city’s first skyscraper built in 1927 by M.D. Oliver-Eakle, a pioneer who broke barriers by managing the building herself in a male-dominated era.  Amarillo Tribune

  • In Amarillo, experts at Robertson Family Organics and Super Bee Relocate and Removal safely relocate bee swarms so they can build hives and produce local honey — a method that protects bees and supports local beekeeping.  NewsTalk 940 AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its July 22nd meeting, the Amarillo City Council approved a $7.39 million deal with Plains Builders, Inc. to build a two-story Fire Station 14 at 810 Quail Creek Drive in northwest Amarillo—designed to house a two-company team and a meeting and training room for firefighters.  KGNC
  • Gov. Abbott signed HB 1481 at AmTech Career Academy on Aug. 1, which requires Texas public schools to ban or store student phones during class for the 2025-2026 school year. He also signed Senate Bill 2420 that sets parental consent for app downloads+ and reflects input from local teachers, parents, and mental health experts.  Amarillo Globe-News
