COMMUNITY NEWS

  • 806 Coffee + Lounge, a community hub for coffee, art and live music for 18 years, is hosting an anniversary fundraiser on Aug. 23-24—featuring brunch, live music, raffles and a T-shirt sale to provide school supplies for San Jacinto Elementary, and the shop continues to embrace local artists and activists.  Amarillo Globe-News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Burlington opened its second store in west Amarillo at 2510 S. Soncy Road on Aug. 15—shoppers lined up early for $10 gift cards and a ribbon-cutting ceremony while the company donated $5,000 to Avondale Elementary School. The new 30,000-square-foot store, which will add 50 to 60 jobs, aims to serve a growing west side community.  Amarillo Globe-News

CRIME NEWS

  • US Marshals arrested Carlos Vidana-Najera (41) at a residence in north Amarillo on August 14 after he allegedly shot a security guard and kidnapped a woman at an event center, with a magistrate judge set to decide his bond later today.  NewsChannel 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced an investigation into utility companies—Xcel Energy, Osmose Utilities Services, and Southwestern Public Services Company—for documents related to wildfires that burned over a million acres in early 2024 and caused deaths and extensive damage; he said the companies may have neglected safety by not maintaining their infrastructure properly.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • During Tuesday's Randall County Commissioners meeting, officials approved the 2025—26 county budget and tax rate of 0.40099 per $100, with a public hearing on August 26 and a vote on September 9. They also agreed to build a 3,000 square foot non-denominational jail chapel at the county correctional facility to provide inmates access to spiritual guidance.  Amarillo Globe-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • BSA Hospice of the Southwest will host a Garden Walk event on Sunday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Amarillo Botanical Gardens — the event includes guided stations, live music by Mike Fuller, and light refreshments for grieving adults with no registration required.  NewsChannel 10
  • Encompass Health and BSA Health System announced a new rehabilitation hospital under construction at Wallace Blvd and Gentry Dr in Amarillo to address rising healthcare needs in the Texas Panhandle. The facility—housing 50 private beds and advanced rehab technology—is scheduled to open on Nov. 10.  ABC 7 Amarillo
