COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare is hosting a Clear the Shelter event this weekend to help over 200 dogs and 60 cats find loving homes while reducing shelter euthanizations. The event will feature a puppy pool party on Saturday from 11 a.m.—5 p.m. with free adoptions and the city covering spaying/neutering, vaccinations, and microchipping.  ABC 7 Amarillo

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On August 19, a medical building at 3501 S. Soncy flooded when a broken 2-inch water line let about 6 inches of water fill the 150,000 square foot facility, prompting firefighters to evacuate 200 people including a patient recovering from surgery who was taken to Northwest Texas Hospital — engineers and pump trucks from five companies will assess and clear the damage.  ABC 7 Amarillo

CULTURE NEWS

  • Amarillo’s Barfield Hotel, built in 1927 and left empty for 40 years, was given a historic marker on July 31 — a nod to its revival after a 2021 renovation that renewed its charm.  NewsTalk 940 AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Aug. 18, a federal appeals court ruled that West Texas A&M President Walter Wendler could not cancel student drag shows because the performances are protected under the First Amendment. The ruling—which overturned a prior decision by Judge Kacsmaryk—ensured that Spectrum WT may host its PG-13 event while the case returns to trial court.  Amarillo Globe-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Amarillo are invited to share input at a public meeting on Monday at 6 p.m. in City Hall Room 1500 as the recruiting firm searches for the next police chief—an eight-question survey on desired qualifications will also be available until Aug 29.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • The City of Amarillo begins a $1.28 million project in NorthHeights this week to replace two-inch water mains with new six-inch pipes that will improve service—Turkey Creek HDD is mobilizing in the alley between the 1200 block of North Polk and Taylor streets while the project will temporarily relocate dumpsters and may affect traffic.  ABC 7 Amarillo

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kids Inc. nearly reached full funding for the Rockrose Sports Park after receiving a $2M donation from the Engler Foundation and a $1.5M check from High Plains Christian Ministries — leaving just $3M to meet the $30M goal. Construction will begin by the end of September — and the facility will host eight baseball fields and 31 soccer fields for many sports.  NewsTalk 940 AM
