COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 17th Annual Crime Stoppers Car Show will be held Saturday, Aug. 30 at the Amarillo Civic Center from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.—general admission is $5, children 10 and under enter free, and first responders do not pay, while vehicle registration is $30 until Friday and $40 on Aug. 23.  NewsChannel 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Texas Education Agency released ratings for area school districts showing that Canyon ISD earned a B—improving by two points to an 88 score—and Dalhart ISD received a C rating with its high school earning a B. Canyon ISD leaders reported steady progress while Dalhart ISD administrators plan to meet with Region 16 in the coming weeks to boost performance.  NewsChannel 10

  • TxDOT will hold a Safety Day event on Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Love’s Travel Center on 9700 E. I-40 where staff will check car seats — visitors can get a free car seat and see a rollover convincer demonstration showing the benefits of seat belts.  NewsChannel 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flooding on Tuesday around 4 p.m. at a medical complex on South Soncy Road caused a ruptured two-inch water line beneath the foundation—leading to the temporary closure of Northwest Surgical Center, BSA Family Medical Clinic and Panhandle Ear, Nose & Throat as surgical cases moved to the Main Hospital with no set timeline for reopening.  NewsChannel 10
  • The inaugural Texas Panhandle Overdose Awareness event will be held this Saturday at Sam Houston Park from 5 to 9 p.m.—organized by the Narcan Lady with live music, food trucks, vendor booths and a memorial service to honor overdose victims. Local law enforcement will also discuss opioid trends to help the community understand the crisis.  Amarillo Tribune

  • Amarillo will host the Boots vs Badges softball game at Hodgetown on Saturday night to benefit the 100 Club of the Texas Panhandle and Coffee Memorial Blood Center—tickets cost $10 and are available at Pak-A-Sak stores and Street Volkswagen.  KGNC
