BUSINESS NEWS

  • Fermi America is working with Westinghouse to complete a license for four advanced modular nuclear reactors at its Amarillo AI campus using the AP1000 design—its COLA was submitted on June 17 to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.  NewsChannel 10
  • Fermi America and Westinghouse announced on Aug. 21 that they are partnering to advance licensing for four AP1000 reactors at the HyperGrid campus in Amarillo— they will work with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to finalize a license application and guide the review process so that the first reactor will operate by 2032.  Amarillo Globe-News

CRIME NEWS

  • Three defendants in the 2022 murder of Jeremie Gomez have been convicted and began long prison terms — Jaicelyn Morgan Anzaldua with 50 years, Joel Coral Marquez with 40 years, and Corrina Yvette Ramos with 20 years — while Adrian Darnell Williams remained in custody with a docket call on August 21.  NewsChannel 10
  • At 8:40 p.m. Wednesday, Amarillo police responded to a report that a suspect tried to stab a man multiple times in the parking lot of La Bella Pizza at 6th and Georgia streets and then fled on a bicycle—police said the victim was stabbed once and taken to the hospital.  ABC 7 Amarillo

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dozens of new Route 66 signs were unveiled on August 21 outside Starlight Ranch in the Texas Panhandle as local leaders and business partners launched a project—supported by TxDOT and Big Texan—to guide travelers ahead of the 2026 centennial. The signs will be installed along I-40 to boost tourism and celebrate the historical legacy of the Mother Road.  Amarillo Globe-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Amarillo Fire Department received a $25,000 grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation to buy extra hoses from donations at two local locations. Deputy Fire Chief David Kouba said the grant boosts firefighting readiness while the department awaits hose supplies for eight new fire trucks — a critical step in enhancing public safety.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Governor Greg Abbott and TxDOT announced a 10-year plan for more than $140 billion in Texas transportation improvements to fund local roads and ease congestion. The Amarillo District will see projects including a $165 million upgrade on US 87 and a $69 million improvement on State Loop 335 — nine projects estimated at nearly $600 million are to be put out to bid between 2026 and 2035.  NewsChannel 10

  • Community members will gather at Sam Houston Park tomorrow from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. for the first annual Overdose Awareness Day — an event featuring live music, food trucks, community vendors and memorial exhibits that will honor lives lost and provide education on prevention.  NewsChannel 10
  • Coffee Memorial Blood Center is urgently calling for O-negative blood donors as supplies remain critically low—O-negative blood is vital in emergencies. Donors can give blood at 7500 Wallace Blvd or at the Game Day Blood Drive on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and each donor will receive a $20 Mission Market voucher.  NewsChannel 10
