COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Emi Schooler, an Amarillo native who benefited from care at Scottish Rite for Children, is hosting the 11th annual Emi’s Color Shoot today at Cactus Flats Gun Club from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. to raise funds for the center that helped her and supports more than 1,500 Panhandle kids—featuring clay shooting, live music, dinner, drinks, raffles, and auctions.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • The Maverick Boys & Girls Club of Amarillo celebrated Panda Cares Day today with support from Panda Express—providing school supplies, books and a meal to local youth. Club officials said the event also distributed backpacks to help prepare students for the upcoming school year.  NewsChannel 10

CRIME NEWS

  • A Potter County grand jury indicted Carlos Najera for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon—he is charged with aggravated kidnapping assault with a deadly weapon after Amarillo police said he shot security guard Frank Diaz in the face when he forced his wife Raquel into a pickup on June 29.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • A court dismissed the appeal from Lyle Lavern Youngs III—who pleaded guilty in June to attempted capital murder and possession of a controlled substance—and ended his chance to challenge a 50-year sentence after he tried to kill an officer during an August 4 incident behind an apartment complex in the 3400 block of Janet Drive.  ABC 7 Amarillo

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The City of Amarillo reported that a pipeline break caused a 20,000-gallon treated wastewater discharge near Harrington Power Generation + Lakeside Drive and said repairs were underway. Officials confirmed the water was fully treated and disinfected, posing no risk to nearby drinking sources.  KGNC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Amarillo officials invite the public to share input on the search for the next police chief at City Hall on Aug. 25 at 6 p.m.—the recruiting firm Public Sector Search & Consulting is hosting the meeting and offering an anonymous online survey open until Aug. 29.  NewsChannel 10
  • Governor Greg Abbott announced a new 10-year transportation plan—set to invest over $146 billion in road improvements. The plan includes projects in the Amarillo District such as a $165 million widening of US 87 to freeway standards and a $69 million upgrade of State Loop 335 for the 2026 Unified Transportation Program.  KGNC
  • TxDOT held a safety event yesterday at the Texas Information Center in Amarillo where staff inspected car seats and demonstrated a rollover crash using a child-sized mannequin to show how dangerous it is when restraints are not used properly—TxDOT also warned that DUI-related traffic crashes are expected to continue over Labor Day weekend and urged drivers to choose a safe ride if they plan to drink.  Amarillo Globe-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Angie Duncan, known as the Amarillo Narcan Lady, is hosting the first Texas Panhandle Overdose Awareness Day tomorrow from 5 to 9 p.m. at Sam Houston Park—she said the event will feature booths on overdose prevention, free Narcan, live music, food trucks, and a moment of silence to remember those lost.  ABC 7 Amarillo
