  • Firehouse Subs donated nearly $25,000 so Amarillo Fire Station No. 8 could buy new hoses—this support helps local firefighters maintain their equipment. The restaurant, founded by Florida firefighters, has a long history of giving back to local fire departments.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Local business owner Danny Byrd died Tuesday, Sept 2 and was known for founding popular eateries such as Bourbon Street Café, Feldman’s Wrong Way Diner and The Lumberyard in Canyon—memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at The Lumberyard Patio.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Amarillo area organizations will host War of Wagons II at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial on Sept. 5 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.—a free food truck battle that supports veterans and mental health awareness.   • Texas Department of Public Safety said one person died in a crash on US 287 north of Amarillo at 12:20 p.m. on Wednesday—details on the incident are not yet available.  NewsChannel 10

CRIME NEWS

  • Amarillo officers tracked an employment scam reported on August 14 in which a suspect sent fraudulent checks that were turned into cryptocurrency and froze the funds on August 18 before they were returned on September 1—helping the victim avoid a major financial loss.  Amarillo Globe-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Texas lawmakers are debating SB10— a bill that may lower Amarillo's property tax growth cap from 3.5% to as low as 1%— and Amarillo CFO Laura Storrs warned that if approved, the change could restrict funds for raises and public safety. The Senate and House continue to review the amendments while community leaders stress that even small adjustments could impact local services.  Amarillo Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Amarillo police have strengthened mental health support during Suicide Awareness Month by training crisis intervention teams with mental health professionals and urging residents to reach out when they notice changes in behavior. The department will host a national law enforcement suicide awareness walk on Sept. 26—an event aimed at supporting both community members and officers in crisis.  ABC 7 Amarillo
