COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Amarillo Parks & Rec will host a Halloween event for mothers and sons on Oct. 4 at Warford Activity Center with activities like Nerf Wars, pumpkin carving & snacks. The event is designed for boys five and older and costs $25 for one parent & child with an extra $5 for each additional child.  96.9 KISS FM
  • Amarillo residents can pre-register for Saturday’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s by attending one of two Fast Pass events—one on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Park Central – The Commons and another on Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Appleseed Boutique—with the walk set for Saturday, Sept. 20 at Sam Houston Park. Organizers say the Fast Pass lets participants pick up wristbands, register, and ask questions as they prepare to raise funds for Alzheimer’s care and research.  NewsChannel 10

  • Amarillo’s Ruffled Cup is franchising after 15 years of success—its owner, Deanna Hurt, is now inviting communities with populations over 100,000 in Texas and across the U.S. to bring the bakery to their cities, following successful runs in Amarillo and Lubbock.  NewsTalk 940 AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 10th annual P3 Pub Crawl returns to Amarillo on Sunday, September 28 when riders will leave 575 on Civic Circle at 1:30 p.m. and travel by bike to local stops including The Golden Light Cantina, Lit Arcade Bar, and Pondaseta Brewing Co before ending with live music at Velvet Funk—tickets cost $10 for five hours of fun.  96.9 KISS FM
  • Amarillo author King Hill wrote a new novella for kids that blends kindness, fantasy and adoption in a magical tale where a runaway finds hope at a warm bakery. Two book signings are scheduled on Sept.18 at Kind House Ukraine Bakery and on Sept.25 at Las Tiendas+ with proceeds from the first event donated to Ukraine.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Shark Beach will host Amarillo’s first Sandcastle Days from Sept. 18 to Sept. 21 using 900 tons of local sand and top sculptors like Lucinda 'Sandy Feet' Wierenga to create art for families and students, while local vendors, food trucks and live music add to a coastal fun experience — the event is expected to draw over 30,000 people. Local fourth-graders will also enjoy free educational field trips to learn about marine life and coastal ecology.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Amarillo Botanical Gardens held its annual Monarch butterfly release event on Sept. 13, drawing around 1,000 visitors as families learned about the migration and enjoyed hands-on activities — the event benefited a Butterfly Free Flight Butterfly House. Director Greg Lusk said that a new fall event—the Trail of 1,000 Jack-o-Lanterns—will run Oct. 22-25 with pumpkin carving contests and family treats.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • The Tri-State Fair & Rodeo kicked off on Sept.12 at the Amarillo Tri-State Exposition grounds with rides, food, livestock shows and rodeo performances and will run through Sept.20. Visitors can enjoy themed days—like Ride ’Em Cowboy Night on Sept.16—and live music along with carnival attractions.  Amarillo Globe-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • John Cantu, a fourth-grade student at Windsor Elementary, is one of 102 students nationally chosen for the National Math Stars cohort—this program will provide him over $100,000 in support over the next 10 years with mentoring, advanced learning, and math competitions.  NewsChannel 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Molly Goodnight Chapter DAR will host a public reading of the Constitution Preamble tomorrow at 4 p.m. on the steps of the Potter County District Courts Building in downtown Amarillo to start Constitution Week—members will also read the Preamble to elementary students that morning—inviting the community to observe this historic document.  NewsChannel 10
  • The city of Amarillo and San Jacinto Neighborhood Advocates invested $100,000 in new street lights, benches, bike racks, and trash cans on 6th Street in the San Jacinto Neighborhood Plan Boundary to prepare for next year's Route 66 centennial celebration—local work programs will help complete the project's third phase.  ABC 7 Amarillo
