COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Amarillo Zoo will host Boo at the Zoo on October 17 and 18 from 6:00–9:00 p.m. as it offers animal displays, candy, and trick-or-treating for families.  96.9 KISS FM
  • Amarillo’s Repair Café is back today at the Warford Activity Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering free repairs on one household item like clothes, bikes, or knives. Residents can learn repair tips from local experts—although repairs may not always be possible.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Amarillo Parks and Recreation will host a Halloween event for mothers and sons on Oct. 4 at Warford Activity Center from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.—the event will feature Nerf Wars, pumpkin carving, and snacks, and charges are $25 for a parent and one child with $5 for each additional child.  NewsTalk 940 AM

  • Healing Through Him Ministries began groundwork on its tiny home village for domestic abuse survivors with plans for 18 homes — the nonprofit will hold a gala on October 24th at 7 p.m. to raise funds, and construction will be complete within a year.  NewsChannel 10

CRIME NEWS

  • TikTok users have filmed themselves urinating on Amarillo school properties— including Western Plateau Elementary, Randall High, and Tascosa High—prompting community outrage and potential legal action for public urination and indecent exposure violations.  96.9 KISS FM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Young math whiz John Cantu, a fourth grader from Windsor Elementary, was one of only 102 students chosen out of 6,000 to join a prestigious program that will provide weekly math mentoring—summer camps and competitions are part of the plan with support valued at over $100,000. He said the program will boost his skills as he dreams of studying space, and his parents praised his early love of math.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Amarillo College held an investiture to formally install its new president, Dr. Jamelle Conner—she is the first female leader in the school’s 15-president history. Dr. Conner said she will work to improve completion and transfer rates while planning new initiatives.  NewsChannel 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pantex broke ground on a new 13,000-square-foot gas testing lab—modernizing its analysis for weapons programs and replacing a facility originally built in 1944. The updated lab will support production by analyzing gas samples for both Pantex and Y-12 as it adapts to new technology.  NewsChannel 10
  • Dick Bivins Stadium in Amarillo hosts football, soccer and track meets and got new lights last year, but major upgrades — such as replacing old bleachers, expanding the track and enlarging the parking lot — are still needed after a 62% vote against a bond proposal.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • The Canyon Fire Department got voter approval for an $8.85 million bond and will use the money to buy a new pump truck & fix its 50-year-old fire station by adding a ventilated gear room. The department will add three firefighters for a 24-hour crew and has asked for a federal grant to add three more, with the remodel set to finish by 2030.  ABC 7 Amarillo

HEALTH NEWS

  • Texas Tech Amarillo held an event on Sept. 17—honoring health workers lost to suicide—with a lecture and wreath-laying ceremony at the campus horse statue. Dr. Analicia Alvarado and Dr. Brian Weis discussed mental health challenges and urged care providers to seek help before stress overwhelms them.  Amarillo Globe-News
