  • Dove Creek Equine Rescue is seeking sponsors for its annual Sunset Dinner on October 18—this fundraiser will support its mission to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abused horses—and will feature dinner, cocktails, live music and local vendors as part of a Western-themed celebration.  NewsChannel 10
  • Tickets for the 'More Precious than Rubies' gala benefiting Healing Through Him Ministries are on sale, and the event will have dinner + a live auction to help rebuild lives. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Don Harrington Discovery Center is offering a spooktacular science-themed day camp this Friday, Oct. 11, and Monday, Oct. 13 for children ages 4 to 11 who are out of school for Indigenous Peoples Day—camps run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with half-day options and available pre-care and after-care add-ons.  NewsChannel 10
  • After dogs got into Caprock High FFA pens and killed or injured show animals, local fundraisers raised nearly $8,000 to help rebuild a safer barn—PETA offered $5,000 through its TeachKind program if the school shifts from animal-based to plant-based agriculture.   • The United Family and Mrs Baird’s Bread announced three Amarillo area teachers as September winners of the Teachers on the Rise program, recognizing dedicated educators from Wolflin Elementary, Canyon Intermediate and Pringle-Morse High School.   • City officials announced a sanitary sewer main project will temporarily close part of SE 4th Avenue between South Polk Street and South Taylor Street in Amarillo today—vehicles may still enter for nearby businesses. The contractor will install a new eight-inch sewer pipe and restore street and alley surfaces with the project expected to complete in December, weather permitting.  NewsChannel 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • This October marks the 40th anniversary of Breast Cancer Awareness Month as local health experts from Panhandle Breast Health and the Harrington Breast Center urge Amarillo residents to schedule routine mammograms to catch cancer early. They stress that women should begin screenings at age 40—unless they are high risk—so that early detection can save lives.  Amarillo Tribune
