COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Communities in Amarillo are hosting Halloween events for families and adults from today through Oct. 31, with free activities including pet costume contests at Bubba’s 33, a pumpkin trail and food trucks at the Botanical Gardens, and a hot air balloon launch at John Stiff Park. Other events at Dalhart, Trinity Baptist Church, Amarillo College and DHDC feature trunk or treats, cultural celebrations and a spooky film screening—each offering a unique way to enjoy the season.  NewsChannel 10

  • Curby’s Amarillo is marking its grand opening at 7200 W McCormick Rd. with a weeklong celebration of free food, drinks, and giveaways from Oct. 20 until Oct. 26—guests who sign up can win free tea or coffee for a year.  Amarillo Globe-News
  • Wesley’s BBQ in Amarillo will open on Fridays only after today to help the restaurant survive seasonal slowdowns — they will keep catering and running their food truck to stay open. The change makes community support more important as the business adjusts to a slow year.  96.9 KISS FM

  • Tom Hanks finished filming a key Cast Away scene near Amarillo at the intersection of FM 48 and FM 1268—fans can visit the site to see where the movie was shot.  96.9 KISS FM
  • Amarillo’s historic Bivins Home (in Center City) hosted free jazz on October 21 when Big G & the Tradewinds played, and it will host Ruth Ellen Lynch & Jazz Plus on October 28 for the final Jazztober event.   • Amarillo ISD will hold a job fair tomorrow from 4 to 6 p.m. at the AACAL Building—1100 N. Forest—to fill various positions including support staff, educators, and custodial roles.  NewsChannel 10
  • The Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine has received accreditation from the American Veterinary Medical Association, shifting the program from a developing school to a nationally recognized institution—staff, students and faculty met high standards to reach this decade-long milestone.   • WTAMU in Canyon jumped from #20 to #4 in Best Value Universities, showing it is a strong and affordable option for local students. The school ranked in Public, Veterans and Engineering categories and charges $18,352 after grants—making it a smart choice for those staying local.  96.9 KISS FM
  • AgTexas Farm Credit Services awarded FFA groups in Panhandle and Canyon each a $2,000 check to offset travel costs for the national finals in Indianapolis — the Panhandle check was given on Oct.20 and the Canyon check on Oct.6.   • Two Center City projects have been named finalists for the 2025 Texas Downtown President’s Awards+ Amarillo City Hall in the historic Hardware Building is competing for the Best Restoration Award while the Potter County Justice Building is vying for Best New Construction, with winners to be announced at the conference in November.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • Food banks in the Texas Panhandle are preparing for increased demand as the federal shutdown enters its third week and SNAP benefits funding risks running out as early as November. HEALTH NEWS

  • A free cancer survivorship center in Amarillo has provided support for survivors with free programs for 10 years. Director Ryan Parnell said the center serves those from the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles with services during and after treatment—helping them regain strength.  NewsChannel 10
