COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Big Jim’s Pizza CO. in Amarillo announced it will offer a free slice of cheese or pepperoni pizza to kids 15 and under from Nov. 1 until SNAP benefits are reinstated—families must show a SNAP card and have their child present. Owner Jim Dewitz said the slice comes from a 20-inch pizza, with each child receiving one slice daily until benefits resume.  ABC 7 Amarillo
  • The Amarillo High Plains Drafters will host a free homebrewing demo at Amarillo Brewing Supply on November 1 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.—lunch is provided and only those 21 and older may attend. Danny Henry from Amarillo Brewing Supply will lead the brewing demonstration and share tips on equipment and techniques for making beer.  96.9 KISS FM
  • Amarillo’s renovated City Hall and new Potter County Justice Building have been named finalists in the Texas Downtown contest, with the former in Best Restoration and the latter in Best New Construction. Voters can help one win the People’s Choice Award by liking their photos on Facebook — a move that brings statewide attention ahead of the awards in November at the Texas Downtown Association Conference in Waco.  NewsTalk 940 AM

  • 107 Roasters is relocating to Amarillo where founders Dave and Elaine Krazer are partnering with local Peace Love Cookies owners to open a café and coffee roasting site – the business will offer tours, coffee, and baked treats when it opens in November at 512 SW 47th.  96.9 KISS FM
  • Amanda Kenner, the McDonald’s general manager at the highway 40 and Western location, won the prestigious Ray Kroc Award for ranking in the top 1% of global managers. She received a cash prize and will travel to the McDonald’s Worldwide Convention in Las Vegas, continuing a family legacy—her mother earned the honor in 2009.  NewsTalk 940 AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Amarillo College will host its 23rd Day of the Dead art show and reception on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Common Lobby at the Washington Street Campus—featuring art by students, faculty and community members, live music by the AC Mariachi Band and free admission.  NewsChannel 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • River Road ISD has been awarded a school safety and security grant to update its security devices and replace outdated equipment. The district’s assistant superintendent said the nearly $350,000 grant will shorten its ten-year upgrade plan to two years—while the district covers a 25% buy-in requirement.  NewsChannel 10
  • Dr. Ben Carson delivered the inaugural Hill Institute lecture at WTAMU on October 27, where he told personal stories about his early struggles and highlighted the value of education, hard work, and strong family ties. He explained how mentors and his own journey shaped his beliefs—resonating with a full auditorium.  Amarillo Globe-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City council members are considering leasing the Amarillo Zoo to Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center to cut the budget and add improvements—such as an on-site vet suite and new exhibit areas. The plan would keep the zoo open to the community, retain parts of the current staff, and feature future talks in upcoming city council meetings.  NewsChannel 10
  • Starting Nov. 1, SNAP benefits will not be issued in Potter and Randall counties due to the government shutdown, affecting over 29,000 recipients — nearly half are children. Food banks are asking for extra support as rising food costs and delayed paychecks increase the need for emergency food assistance.  Amarillo Tribune

HEALTH NEWS

  • Amarillo’s Fun Noodle Bar was shut down today after health inspectors found roaches and other issues even though it earned a B grade with a score of 86 — the restaurant must fix these problems and pass a re-inspection by November 3 to reopen.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Amarillo VA Health Care System, which serves over 25,000 veterans, will host its 18th annual Welcome Home event on November 1 at the Amarillo Civic Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.—offering primary care, behavioral health services, and transportation support; however, many younger veterans remain hesitant to use these benefits.  NewsChannel 10
