COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Maxwell's Amarillo Lights returns for its sixth season at Maxwell's Pumpkin Farm where families see over one million lights, a 30-foot tree with 20,000 lights, and a 50-foot pixel tree, a 128-foot hayride light tunnel plus nightly Santa visits at 6 p.m. The event runs November 28 to December 23 from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. with tickets at $17.95 online and $22.95 at the gate.  NewsTalk 940 AM
  • Santa appeared at various Amarillo events earlier this season and will continue to pop up for festive photo sessions and family gatherings throughout December, including stops at Westgate Mall and the Botanical Gardens.   • On November 20, more than 700 children and families gathered at Maverick Boys & Girls Club in Amarillo for its Turkey Day, where after sharing an early Thanksgiving meal, the club announced a surprise gift of 64 laptops provided by AT&T and Human-I-T — devices that come with two years of digital support to help kids learn and families stay connected.   • Candy Cane Lane has kicked off the holiday season as local homes light up along Gainsborough Road and host a snowball fight between Santa and the Grinch.   • The Salvation Army in Amarillo held its long-standing Thanksgiving dinner where over 70 volunteers prepared nearly 200 meals with turkey, mashed potatoes, and other sides.   • A new sign at the old Munchie's site (3rd and McMaster) shows Lupita's is now open, confirming the restaurant has taken over the location after Munchie's did not reopen following a fire. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Texas gas prices increased last week when regular fuel averaged $2.65 per gallon, up from $2.58 the week before, according to the EIA. The prices remain about 13.3% below the national average.  Amarillo Globe-News

  • Caprock Canyon State Park received international recognition for reducing light pollution and preserving a natural dark sky; it became the 26th Dark Sky certified site in Texas (one of 250 worldwide) after a refreshed certification process.  ABC 7 Amarillo

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Amarillo is working with community partners to open cold weather shelters and offer free transportation for people without housing as bitter cold moves into the Panhandle next week. Daytime centers at PARC, Guyon Saunders, Faith City Mission and the Downtown Amarillo Public Library and nighttime shelters at Transformation Park Safe Space, the Salvation Army, Faith City Mission and the Code Blue Warming Station will provide support — outreach teams will also deliver supplies and check on those outdoors.  NewsChannel 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Amarillo VA Health Care System said that the Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center reopened its Emergency Department Services on November 28 at 7 p.m. and now operates 24/7 — the facility had closed its services earlier this week.  NewsChannel 10

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Data from Realtor.com shows that in October the median listing price for homes in Potter County was $225,000 — down 3.7% from $233,650 the previous month. Listings increased by 6.1% with 104 new homes and the median time on market was 58 days.  Amarillo Globe-News
